Mark your calendars for March 23 auction
EXETER - What do a homemade
denim quilt, a gourmet pizza dinner for
10 and an offer to wash your car -
inside and out - have in common? They
are all items that will be up for grabs on
March 23 at the Time and Talent
Auction at South Huron District High
School.
The Time and Talent Auction is a
fundraising event for South Huron
District High School and is being run by
the Student Council. Planning for the
auction is well underway, and already
many generous donations have been
made by a number of local businesses
and members of the community. Some
of these items include a brand new DVD
player, two handmade denim quilts, a
composter, a bookshelf, a set of Roots
watches, a lawn and garden dump cart
(estimated retail value $400), birdhous-
es and birdseed, and several gift bas-
kets. A number of gift certificates have
been donated to the auction as well,
including a gift certificate for $100 off
an RV rental. The Hawks have also
donated season tickets and t -shirts, as
well as a hockey stick signed by the
players - perfect for the true super fan!
But that's not all! Students and staff
have already come forth with a great
deal of enthusiasm in terms of donating
their time and talent. Mr. Peat has
donated a free oil, lube and filter and
Student Council has donated a home-
made Italian dinner for 12 (clean-up
and dishes included!). Mr. Robilliard and
the Senior Concert Band have donated
the opportunity to conduct one piece at
the upcoming Cabaret (April 23 and 24)
and Stephen Troyer has donated his
time to wash a car - from the inside out!
Two students from Student Council,
Vicki Hartman and Hilary Deunk, have
also offered to paint a room in a house.
Roman Roduner, a grade 12 student,
has donated two days of labour. A song
dedication from Megan Finkbeiner at
the final assembly of the year, free math
tutoring and guitar lessons from Mr.
Small, and a pie for every month of the
year from Suzanne Butler are also up
for grabs. These are just a few of the
many donations that have already been
made to the auction!
The Time and Talent Auction will take
place in the small gym at South Huron
District High School on Thursday, March
23, beginning at 7 p.m. and admission is
free. Fun Night for all grade 7 and 8 stu-
dents will take place at the same time in
the large gym (admission is $2). The
auction will be both live and silent and
will also a feature a bake sale with
goodies made by students and staff.
School Council's popular gift baskets will
also be raffled off at the event, and tick-
ets for the raffle are $2 each and are on
sale at a number of area businesses, as
well as at the auction. All proceeds from
the auction will be put towards funding
extra -curricular activities at the school
and paying for well-deserved student
scholarships.
If you have any questions or would like
to make a last-minute donation to the
auction, please contact a member of
Student Council at 235-0880. See you at
the Time and Talent Auction!

Catholic board confident
in uniform supplier
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
DUBLIN — The supplier of
student uniforms for St.
Anne's Catholic Secondary
School in Clinton prides itself
on its ethical standards, and
the Huron -Perth Catholic
District School Board seems
confident the company fol-
lows through on those stan-
dards.
At a regular meeting of the
board Feb. 27, education
committee chairperson Mike
Miller presented a synopsis
of the board's check on
Halpern's, the company
which supplies the student
uniforms. The check was
carried out after questions
about whether or not human
rights or environmental
abuses were committed
through the manufacturing
of the uniforms.
St. Anne's is the only pub-
licly funded school in Huron
and Perth counties which
requires student uniforms.
According to Miller's
report, Halpern's "is a partic-
ipant of the Retail Council of
Canada's Responsible Trade
Working Group, the only uni-
form company selected for
this honour."
Much of his report quoted
directly from the Halpern's
website, including references
to "product quality, reliability
and adherence to humane
and ethical practices" as well
as "ongoing monitoring and
spot-checks."
"We do not choose suppli-
ers or clothing lines that are
manufactured under condi-
tions that we would not
accept for our families or
ourselves," the website,
located at www.halperns.ca ,
states.

policies requires upholding
"the dignity of the human
person, human rights and
responsibilities" in all busi-
ness transactions, and Miller
expressed confidence the
Halpern's supply agreement
complies with that policy.
