Report cards coming
home this week
EXETER — I would like to start this week's column
by congratulating the Panther Girls' Hockey team and
coaches Heather Strano and Adam Agar for winning
the WOSSAA championship last week.
To win the title, the girls had to defeat the defending
provincial champions from Huron Park Secondary
School in Woodstock, the pre -tourna-
ment favourite and best team in the
province, according to the London
media. The Panther girls dispatched
them easily, winning by a score of 6-1,
and went on to face our arch -rivals
from Madill in the fmal. The Panthers
prevailed again, winning in overtime
and they now head to the provincial
championships in St. Thomas March
20-21.
We know the girls will do us proud
and we wish them the best of luck as
they prepare for the provincial cham-

This week our music students are competing in the
Regional Musicfest competitions in London under the
direction of Robert Robilliard and Kate Hollestelle. We
wish them the best of luck as well as they prepare for
the National Musicfest competition later in the spring.
On Thursday of this week, students in Grades 9 and
10 will receive their second report cards for year-long
courses. For Grade 9 students that means a report on
math, English, and two other classes, while for Grade
10 students it will be a report on only math and
English. The next report card will be the mid-term
report for Semester Two classes, which will be issued
in April.
Also this week, we head into March Break, which
starts on Friday this year, a day earlier than usual.
Immediately after the break, we have a couple of sig-
nificant events happening. On the evening of March 23,
the Students' Council and the School Council are host-
ing a joint fundraiser, our Fun Night and Time and
Talent Auction.
The School Council will be raffling off a number of
wonderful gift baskets, and the Students' Council will
have both a silent and a live auction of time, talent and
merchandise. I would like to thank all the local busi-
nesses and individuals who have so generously donat-
ed to the auction and gift baskets: your support of our
school activities is greatly appreciated. And I would
encourage everyone to attend this event and support
this fundraising venture.
On the morning of March 29 students across the
province will be writing the Ontario Secondary School
Literacy Test. The test will take about three hours to
complete and will start at 9 a.m. Only students in

There will be a second bus run to bring senior students

Finally, I would like to wish all our students and staff
a relaxing and enjoyable March Break.
Capsule Comments
by Ernie Miatello
Nuts have a head protection effect. The dose is about
4 servings per week. Walnuts and sunflower seeds
have a healthy amount of polyunsaturated fat in them
and are good choices. Others include almonds,
cashews, pistachios, pine nuts and pecans. A serving
is 30 gm 1=1 ounce)
Here's an idea to avoid drug mix-ups. "Brown bag" all your current
medications and bring them to your next doctor visit. Involve your
pharmacist as well. With the multiplicity of drug names, different brands
and appearances of drugs and changes in drug orders, it's easy to get
them mixed up.
March is National Kidney Month. The Kidney Car Program is a
fundraising initiative whereby you can donate your old car to the Kidney
Foundation of Canada who will recycle or sell it. Tax receipts are given. If it
isn't running, they will even tow it away. It's a good program.
March is also a time we focus on poison prevention. Keep the local
poison control centre phone number close to the phone. When calling the
centre, tell the age of the person who took the poison, how much you think
was ingested and describe the condition of the person at the time of the
call. Acting fast in a poisoning situation can save a life.
