CLANDEBOYE
— A bronze
medal was
awarded to
Clandeboye resi-
dent Sarah
Cunningham
after a success-
ful run in the
15th U.S. Open
recently, hosted
by USA
Taekwondo in
Dallas, Texas.
Ontario
brought 40 com-
petitors to the
event which is
the biggest open
taekwondo tour-
nament in North
America.
About 1,000
black belt com-
petitors from 52
countries partic-
ipated.
Ontario
brought home
11 medals —
three gold, three
silver and five
bronze.
Sarah's father
Allan competed
too, receiving a
gold medal for
his division
which was the
40 to 50 year
old, 145-165
pound category.
Allan also won
a gold in pat-
terns, third dan
black belt which
is a small divi-
sion.
Both Sarah
and Allan are
coached by
Master Greg
Bauer of
Waterloo and
are trained by
Master In Kyung
Kim of Toronto
on the week-
ends.
Sarah is a
third dan black
belt.
There are 10
levels of
coloured belts to
earn, beginning
at white and
ending with the
black belt.
A third dan
black belt is
even higher.
The
Cunninghams
also run
McGillivray
Taekwondo in
Parkhill.
Sarah compet-
ed against 21
other girls in her
division of 18-
32 -year-old
females.
She won her
first fight
against USA
Colorado, 7-0.
Her second
fight was a mis-
match against
USA California.
Sarah's coach
told her to go
easy in the last
part. She won 7-
0 again.
Her third fight
against
Oklahoma was
more difficult,
but she came
through, win-
ning 4-0.
The fourth
fight was
against Puerto
Rico. Sarah was
leading into the
third round. The
fight ended in a
tie which led to
overtime. Puerto
Rico won with
seven seconds
left on the clock.
Puerto Rico
also won the
division in her
next match
against
Colorado.
Sarah then
received the
bronze.
Her father
Allan says, "This
is probably the
best fighting she
has done. The
match could
have gone either
way very easily.
In fact we
thought it had
— so close."
Some of
Sarah's success-
es include win-
ning first place
last year at the
Circle City
Championship
in Indiana,
placing second
in the 2004
Junior Nationals
in Nova Scotia
and winning the
2002 Canadian
Open in
Montreal.
Sarah is keep-
ing busy this
month.
Senior finals
are coming up
in Kingston.
There is also a
tournament in
Ohio, the
Amateur
Athletic Union
Qualifiers which
will determine
if she moves on
to the 2006
Nationals.
