The Times Advocate, 2006-03-08, Page 7Wednesday, March 8, 2006 Exeter Times–Advocate 7 Thanks for assistance On behalf of the Canadian Institute for the Blind, South Western District I would like to thank the people of Huron County for their generosity during our recent Crocus Campaign. Your kindness enabled us to see a 15 per cent increase in our sales. With approximately 300 clients in Huron County the funds raised are assisting your neighbours. Fundraising only works with good volunteers and we are blessed with the best in Huron County. Thanks to all of the groups, clubs, individuals and merchants for all your support. Every campaign needs a leader and Mr. Gordon Hill is world class. An Olympic medal of thanks to Gordon. Our next campaign will be our Walk for Independence May 28 in Goderich. Stay tuned for more information. BOB FISIIER A dignified protest To the farmers, their families, the agricultural retail suppliers and all who participated in the tractor rally March 1 between Goderich and Clinton: You must be congratulated for the great showing and the dignified, determined and polite protest rally which you created. The grassroots participation and leader- ship was fantastic. Actions like this make our work at the county federation level easier and more importantly effective. It is great to see that our farmers value each other and help each other. Keep up the pressure! To all the local travellers, residents, media and the OPP, thank you for your support. Huron County Federation of Agriculture MARILYN BROADFOOT, public relations committee Grits and Tories don't offer change Nearly 9,000 people in Huron -Bruce voted NDP in the last election — a substantial increase from 2004.While I would like to be able to thank each of those people indi- vidually, that task is impossible. So to everyone who voted NDP or considered doing so, thank you from myself, my family and all of the volunteers who made up the local NDP campaign team. I am enormously proud of our campaign and the team of local volunteers who gave of themselves so generously to provide voters in Huron - Bruce a positive alternative to the kind of politics we continue to see in Ottawa. It saddens me to see how quickly the new Conservative government returned to the ethical standards of the past.To me, and I know many others, Stephen Harper's actions around picking his cabinet displayed the same sort of cynicism and ethical lapses he accused the Liberals of. Voters wanted change and the majority in Huron -Bruce voted for change, but it is now clear that neither the Liberals nor the Conservatives will ever deliv- er the kind of change people want. One of the issues we highlighted in the last election was the need for electoral reform such as proportional repre- sentation so that every vote counts. Another part of the NDP package, developed by Ed Broadbent was a requirement that those MPs who wish to cross the floor be required to consult their constituents in a byelection. The action of now -Conservative David Emerson in thumbing his nose at the voters in his riding mere weeks after an election demonstrates how neces- sary this is.The fact that Stephen Harper not only accept- ed, but actively encouraged, this behaviour demon- strates that saying something and living it are two differ- ent things. This sorry episode makes it clear that real change won't happen by switching back and forth between the same old parties who have let you down time and again. Many people have asked me, 'what now?' I will contin- ue to work for real change and the election of an NDP MP. For me, fighting for change, social justice, health care, the needs of seniors, the environment, youth, eco- nomic development and the crisis facing farmers is not just an election -time activity. It is something that should occur every day. I know that the volunteers on the NDP campaign team will continue working to better their communities and this country. I will be joining them and I hope you will too. If you would like to get involved, or to highlight an issue you think needs attention please contact us at huronbrucendp@bmts.com. Congratulations to Paul Steckle for his success.I wish you and your family the best. As well, congratulations to the other candidates in the last election. While we might differ on our vision for the future of our communities and country, the dedication and commitment shown during a long and difficult campaign are a credit to you and to Huron -Bruce.
