Rugby clinic
EXETER — Minor rugby
is coming to the region in
a big way.
On Feb. 25, Southwest
Rugby has invited young-
sters to a jamboree at the
South Huron District High
School (large gym) at 10:
30 a.m.
"We have invited chil-
dren in elementary school
Grades 5 through Grade
8," says Maggie Smillie,
who is helping co-ordinate
Minor Rugby for
Southwest Rugby.
"This is a non -contact
co-ed sport designed for
every type of child,
regardless of their sport-
ing abilities," she said.
At the jamboree partici-
pants will be taught the
fundamentals of flag
rugby.
They will learn how to
catch and carry the ball as
well as how and where to
pass.
"For the jamboree, we
are very lucky to have
some experienced players
as coaches, including Dan
and Mike Pletch of Lucan
who are former Under -21
Canada players and are in
the senior men's Team
Canada as international
players," she adds.
As well, South Huron
graduates Carrie Prout
(University of Guelph) and
Julie Prout (University of
Waterloo) will be helping
coach along with Kat
Cureton (Canada U19)
and Danielle Jacques,
who both play for the
University of Western
Ontario, the current
Canadian university
women's rugby team
champion.
Smillie added the Avon
Maitland School Board is
introducing flag minor
rugby as an elementary
school activity.
As part of a Rugby
Ontario initiative, in the
spring Southwest Rugby
volunteers will help coach
at elementary schools in
the area.
As well, some minor
rugby tournaments are
being planned.
In the spring and sum-
mer, Southwest Rugby is
opening the doors to all
children (six years and up)
in Exeter and surrounding
areas to flag rugby.
"We are going to be
hosting an Exeter jam-
boree in the morning then
arrange for a men's or
women's senior league
match to be played in the
afternoon.
"The Sarnia Saints
rugby club is planning a
similar jamboree, to
which Exeter players will
also be invited. These
events will show children
that if they really enjoy
rugby and love to learn
the fundamentals then
eventually when they go
on to high school they will
have the knowledge and
skills of handling the ball
already in place. Rugby
can and does appeal to
children of different sport-
ing abilities, size, strength
and skill," says Smillie.
"We are grateful to the
Exeter Lions Club, which
has made a donation to
Southwest Rugby to help
run this summer pro-
gramme for kids," says
Bob Illman of Grand
Bend, president of
Southwest Rugby.
"This generous support
will allow us to introduce
rugby to kids at minimal
cost."
Players and parents
interested in minor rugby
can contact Chris Collison
at 238-6573 or Maggie
Smillie at 235-2531.
Ritchie hits 100
KIPPEN — On Feb. 11,
the Kippen Gun Club was
holding its regular
Saturday afternoon skeet
shoot. Throughout the
winter months the club
holds a high average
competition which
includes 12, 20, 28 and
410 gauge.
The members shoot
their preferred gauges
and record the best
score out of 50 targets
they can hit that day.
Fourteen year old
Jordan Ritchie of Hensall
was shooting his 20
gauge Beretta shotgun
and carded a perfect 50.
In a regular competi-
tion the event comprises
of 100 targets so he
decided to see if he could
hit the illusive 100
straight. Ritchie nailed
the next 50 to record his
100.
Ritchie is the youngest
member of the Kippen
Gun Club to hit 100
straight targets in skeet.
The members of the
Kippen Gun Club con-
gratulate Ritchie on this
fine accomplishment and
wish him continued suc-
cess.

Jets eliminate Milverton
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — "It wasn't a pretty goal
but it stood up," was how
Lucan/Ilderton Jets general manag-
er Rob Andrews described the win-
ning goal that advanced Lucan-
Ilderton past the Milverton Four
Wheel Drives
The Jets were in Milverton
Saturday night for game three of
their series.
With eight minutes left in a score-
less game, Andrews said Mark
Landon was trying to clear the puck
out from behind the Milverton net.
"It deflected off of about three guys
and ended up behind the goal -
tender."
The Jets were outshot 47-20 but
Andrews said goalie Dave Riddell
was outstanding to lead them to the
win.
Andrews said the Jets took a risk
going to Milverton for game three

"If they were to win that game that
would put them right back in it, but
we wanted to get it over with."
Andrews added the team is looking
forward to playing on the double AA
side of the playoffs after winning the
A side last season.
Facing the Jets in the next round is
defending champion Elora with
game one in Elora Feb. 24 at 8:30
p.m. Game two is in Lucan Feb. 25
at 8:30 p.m.
Andrews said the Rocks are a big
team with a powerful offence.
"We'll have to have our best game
to beat them, I know that," said
Andrews.
"We'll have to play penalty free
games. With a team like that we
can't afford to take penalties
because they'll capitalize right
away...they have been there before
and they know how to win."
