New doctor of Psycholo
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Doctor Kate Partridge is bringing her
skills as a psychologist to South Huron Hospital one
day a week.
Partidge moved to Crediton last July and started at
the hospital in the middle of January.
It is the first time for such a service at the hospital,
according to CEO Deb Hunt.
A registered psychologist for 25 years, Partridge said
she is looking forward to practicing in Exeter, as well
as in London where she also maintains an office.
Partridge works with adults suffering from stess
related physical and emotional problems such as panic
attacks, anxiety and depression.
Along with her practice, Partridge runs workshops
on relaxation and stress managment in London and
will start one locally if there is interest.
She said signs of stress include insomnia, irratibility,
poor concentration, muscle tension and teeth grinding
which can lead to more serious illnesses since stress
weakens the immune system.
Depression is also common from stress and can
result from anything that requires change and can
accumulate over a period of years from events such as
graduating from school, new jobs and getting married.
To escape stress, Partridge said people turn to alco-
hol, gambling and drugs and can become either with-
in South Huron
drawn or dependent which can damage relationships.
"Life loses its joy," said Partridge.
Her techniques for treating the illness "is a very
practical approach," teaching skills for coping with not
much childhood analysis.
Partridge said our culture has the expectations we
should be working all the time at the expense of quali-
ty of time.
"A lot starts with stress, and things develop...it sets
you up for more serious things."
Much of the treatment for stress related illness is
people learning to give themselves permission to relax,
said Partridge.
Learning how to breathe properly, which Partridge
said 70 per cent of people don't know how to do is
another technique for reducing stress.
And one of the simplest methods of stress reduction
is to cut out caffeine for a month.
Two cups a day is the maximum amount of coffee
anyone should have, said Partridge.
She also described Red Bull as "vicious stuff...it's like
shooting up with stress hormones.
"Contemporary life is getting faster...employer
demands are more outrageous," said Partridge who
added shift work causes more stress especially if the
hours are always changing.
Partridge said she became a psychologist out of a
desire to be in touch with people and from an impulse
to help.
