MacGrandles said the Red Cross is seeking 10 volun- teers in the area to become part of a team that will respond in the event of a disaster such as a fire or flood. According to MacGrandles, training is provided free to those 18 years of age and older who have undergone a valid police check. "We'd like as many as possible...what we're looking for is to have people trained so in the event of a disaster they're already trained and ready to go. "What we found during Hurricane Katrina was a lot of people would come in and say `I want to help' but they weren't trained....this way in the event of a flood or a tornado, we have trained volunteers we could call on. "We provide the training They don't need specialized first aid training. It's all provided." While MacGrandles said people with skills such as medical and engineering training are an asset, it is not required. She added if enough people are interested a training course will be run in Exeter. The first part of the training, according to MacGrandles is a self study home booklet on the Red Cross and its principles. "They learn about the phases of emergency response and how the Red Cross fits into that. "And then they have a weekend training session which is the more involved one. You learn how to fill out the forms, how to work with people who have been affected by disasters and what to expect when you're working in a shelter situation. Once you have this training you are now qualified to help out with disaster situations." One of the jobs she said volunteers might be doing in an emergency would be registration and inquiry at a shelter, where they would be asking questions about addresses and special needs. "They would also be working in a shelter so they might be responsible for finding personal needs such as diapers, baby items and glasses things like that." MacGrandles said most of the work is field work. "You're working directly with the people who are affect- ed. You're definitely first line." More training is also available for volunteers who wish to continue and move up to management levels with the Red Cross such as managing a shelter. Volunteers wishing to help during emergencies must arrange it with their employers, but MacGrandles said the Red Cross doesn't force volunteers to go. Those wishing to volunteer can contact MacGrandles at 273-9339 or kelly.macgrandles@redcross.ca.
