Hawks and Irish prepare for Highway 4 battle
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks and Lucan Irish
will face off tonight
(Wednesday) in Lucan at
7:45 p.m. in the latest
battle of Highway 4 in the
first round of the Junior
D playoffs.
Game two of the series
will be Friday night in
Exeter at 8:30 p.m. with
game three Feb. 22 in
Lucan.
The Hawks finished
their regular season play
with a 2-2 tie at home
against the Mitchell
Hawks giving Exeter a
24-12-3-1 record for 52
points, three back of
Mitchell and tied with
Thamesford, but the
Trojans took second
place due to a better
record against the
Hawks.
"They're a better team
than the standings show,"
said Exeter coach and
general manager Dale
Howard about the Irish.
"They went through a
lot of injuries at one point
and they got their num-
ber one goaltender back.
We have a lot of respect
for them and I don't take
them lightly."
Despite the tie Friday
night, Howard said he
was happy with the effort
of his team against
Mitchell. "I thought it was
two great goaltenders
and two top teams fight-
ing each other. I thought
it was a great game...I
was extremely happy."
With the teams evenly
matched, Howard said
the series would turn on
the preparedness of the
teams.
"I don't think there is
any one thing, it's just
going to be coming out of
the dressing room and
being prepared to play
from the get go.
Friday night versus
Mitchell the Hawks took a
first period lead with a
shorthanded goal from
Craig Masse but Kyle
Verbene evened the score
four minutes later.
Exeter took the lead
again in the second with
a goal from Drew Bayliff
but the visitors again
evened the score before
the period was over.
With neither team scor-
ing in the third, it went to
overtime where both
goalies proved unbeat-
able, leaving it in a 2-2
draw.
"We're going to stay out
of the penalty box to the
best of our ability...we've
got great goaltending,
steady defence and four
lines we like.
Howard said he is also
glad to have Greg
Thompson back with the
team. "He's a good kid
and a good hockey play-
er."
In the league awards
presentations, Exeter
goalie Justin Hayter was
named Morenz Division
MVP, with Joe Nesbitt the
Division MVP defenceman
and Davies won the divi-
sion scoring title.
Nesbitt was also named
as the Morenz all-star left
defenceman, with
Lucan's Kyle Roth the all-
star right defenceman
and Davies picked as the
right wing all-star.

Sherwoods lead MonktonWildcats 2-0
HENSALL — The
Hensall Sherwoods
took a 2-0 lead in their
best of five series with
the Monkton Wildcats
with a pair of wins
over the weekend.
The Sherwoods dou-
bled the Wildcats 6-3
Friday night in
Monkton before
pulling out a 4-3 over-
time win in Hensall
Saturday night.
Hensall will attempt
to eliminate Monkton
Friday night in Hensall
in game three of the
series which starts at 9
p.m.
Game four if neces-
sary will be in
Monkton Saturday
night at 8:30 p.m. with
game five scheduled
for 8:30 p.m. in
Hensall Sunday.
Friday night in
Monkton the Wildcats
took a 1-0 lead in the
first but the
Sherwoods roared
back with two goals
from Chris Downie
and one from Dave
Farquhar for a 3-1
lead at the end of one
period.
Jeff Finkbeiner
extended the lead to 4-
1 before Monkton
replied to cut the lead
to two goals.
But just 20 seconds
later Dave Farquhar
gave the Sherwoods
back their three -goal
lead.
Monkton again got
close in the third peri-
od to trail 5-3 but
Jeremy Vanbergen put
the game away for the
Sherwoods three min-
utes later.
Saturday night in
Hensall, Finkbeiner
put the Sherwoods
ahead early in the first
and Mark Bell made it
2-0 45 seconds into
the second period.
But a pair of
Monkton goals a
minute apart put them
even with the
Sherwoods.
Nathan Regier gave
Hensall another lead
with just under two
minutes left in the
period, but the
Wildcats struck back
with 23 seconds left to
tie it again.
With no scoring in
the third, the series
went to overtime for
the first time where
J.R. Davies won it for
the Sherwoods at 8:45
of the extra period.
Hensall general
manager Todd
McCann said the
biggest difference
between the two
games was the penalty
minutes.
"Friday was very
chippy and physical.
The referee on
Saturday did a lot bet-
ter job. We knew we
could just play hockey
and not have to worry
about the reffing part
of the game," said
McCann.

The Sherwoods posted wins of 6-3 and 4-3 over the
Wildcats to take a 2-0 lead in the best of five series.
