Grand Bend Women's Institute Day will be honoured Feb. 19
GRAND BEND Grand Bend Women's Institute will
honor Women's Institute Day on Feb. 19. The Women's
Institute at all levels is an organization for personal
growth and community action. The objectives are: To
assist and encourage women to become more knowl-
edgeable and responsible citizens; To promote and
develop good family life skills; To help discover, stimu-
late and develop leadership; To help identify and
resolve needs in the community.
The first Women's Institute in the world was organized
at Stoney Creek , Ontario on Feb. 19, 1897 by co-
founders Adelaide H. Hoodless and Erland Lee.
On April 5, 1945 a group of women met and the home
of Mrs. Ed Gill Sr. to organize a Women's Institute
Grand Bend Branch. There were 18 charter members.

Hensall - Audibly Awesome were the featured enter-
tainment at the Birthday Party Jan. 26. Community
seniors attending Queensway's Dining Program feasted
on a delicious meal and then joined residents for the
musical program with Len Lobb, Richard Rose, Bill
Strong, Richard Lobb and Graham Bowker, the talent
that make up Audibly Awesome.
Andy Rau and his group made music in the retire-
ment home lounge for Friendship Friday Feb. 3.
Featured entertainment for Feb. 17 will be Martin
Gelinas and his family. Retirement residents thorough-
ly enjoy the twice monthly Friday evening music in
their living room.
Queensway residents, volunteers, and staff were grat-
ified that they were able to raise over $1,000 with their
participation in the Alzheimer's Walk for Memories at
Exeter Hospital. In February we supported the CNIB
Crocus Campaign with several staff purchasing the
beautiful purple flowering plants from CNIB represen-
tative Gordon Hill.
Queensway Retirement Residence is going strong
with tenants enjoying many events and programs but
the Nursing Home level has been closed as residents
and staff deal with the Lebug" that has been prevalent in
the community. One to one attention at the bedside in
the form of music, visitation, reading and various ther-
apies are helping residents cope with the closure and
cancellation of large group events and entertainment
that they are so accustomed to enjoying.

Mrs. Verna Lovie a charter member is still a present day
member. Recently Grand Bend Women's Institute pur-
chased a mechanical lift for the Grand Bend Adult Day
Care Centre. Cass Lovie, president placed first in an
Ontario quilt block competition and Brenda Love placed
3rd in the Historical Picture Tour of "My Community
Ontario Competition". Delight Rath wrote a story of her
war experiences and it was published in the book,
"Fighting For Home and Country". Two quilts were
auctioned at the Breast Cancer Quilt Show in Stratford.
The displays in the showcase and the Grand Bend
Library are a project of the Grand Bend Women's
Institute. Several quilts have been made and sold with
profits used for Women's Institute projects.
Locally, Grand Bend Women's Institute have support-
ed the library, fairs, hospitals, nursing homes and recre-
ation areas. Also, on the local level, Tweedsmuir
Histories have been developed and maintained. These
books document the histories of our community by
recording the stories of buildings, people, farms, and
industry. These books are stored at the Lambton
Museum. Our scrapbooks containing similar informa-
tion are available to read at the Grand Bend Library.
Internationally, Women's Institutes belong to the
Associated Country Women of the World. As members,
they support community improvement projects in The
Third World like nutrition, education and sanitary facili-
ties. They also act as a consultant to the United Nations.
Did you know that W. I. is instrumental in helping to
accomplish: the pasteurization of milk; requiring breath-
alyzer and blood tests for motorists; having white lines
painted on the centre of provincial highways; having
poison containers clearly marked; flashing lights on
school buses.

Women's Institutes of Ontario and our local branch click

about every feature the discerning home -owner craves. The front door, a few steps beyond a small trellis -covered patio, leads into a roomy foyer.
