Grade 7-8 all-stars play in Stratford n'`le
STRATFORD — On
Jan. 28, the
Mitchell/Exeter all-
star boy's Grade 7/8
basketball team trav-
eled to Stratford
Northwestern to com-
pete in the six -team
first annual Grade 7/8
basketball tourna-
ment.
The team was made
up of seven players
from Exeter and
seven players from
Mitchell.
These were the
team's first games of
the season and the
boys seemed to gel
well together from
the beginning of the
day.
In the round robin
portion of the tourna-
ment the team went
4-1 with their only
loss coming to the
eventual champions
from Northwestern.
The team beat
Central Perth in their
first game, lost to
Northwestern in their
second game and beat
North Easthope in
their third game.
They defeated
Stratford Central in
the fourth game, and
won a close game
against Downie
Central to finish the
round robin.
After finishing sec-
ond in the boys divi-
sion the team had to
play a semi-final
game against the
third place team from
Downie Central.
The team struggled
in the first half, trail-
ing 11-4 heading into
the second and last
half of the game.
However, the boys
regrouped by playing
stellar defense and

lay-ups and eventual-
ly win the game 16-
14.
In the finals, the
boys played a tough
Northwestern team
that defeated them
earlier in the day.
Northwestern took
an early lead and
never looked back,
beating the
Mitchell/Exeter team
20-12 to win the tour-
nament.
The team had a
great tournament fin-
ishing with a record
of 5-2 with their only
losses coming to
Northwestern.
For their efforts the
boys were rewarded
with a Finalists
Plaque from tourna-
ment conveners Rob
Simmons and Derek
Farr.
Individual award
winners from the
Mitchell/Exeter team
were Brendan
Nicholson who won
the Team Character
and Leadership
award from the
Toronto Raptors
John MacGreggor
who was the Team
Tournament MVP.
All the players dis-
played excellent skills
and sportsmanship
throughout the day.
The team thanks all
the parents and vol-
unteers who spent the
day with the team in
Stratford and they are
looking forward to a
fun and successful
season.
