EXETER — The
Exeter Hawks remain
in the hunt for first
place in the Yeck
conference with two
games remaining in
the regular season.
The Hawks stayed
close to Mitchell with
a pair of wins on the
weekend, starting
with a 5-2 win over
Lucan Friday night
before rolling over
North Middlesex
Sunday afternoon,
with a 7-2 win.
"I'm extremely
happy,...we've got
four wins in the last
four games." said
Exeter coach and
general manager
Dale Howard
although he added he
wasn't happy with
the effort of the team
Friday night.
"I was happy with
the win, I wasn't
happy with the game.
We came out of the
first period tied 1-1, I
thought we should
have been down
about 5-0. We were
flat."
Lucan was coming
off a hard fought 3-2
loss against North
Middlesex
Wednesday night in
Lucan.
Exeter remains
behind first place
Mitchell with a 23-
12-2-1 record for 49
points, three ahead of
third place
Thamesford while
Wellesley is first
overall with 62
points, one up on
Delhi.
Mitchell has four
games remaining
after having a game
cancelled Feb. 5
which was to be
made up Monday
night
Mitchell took on
Thamesford Tuesday
in another scheduled
game and faces
Exeter Friday night
and Lucan Saturday.
Friday night, the
Hawks spotted the
Irish to a 1-0 lead
early in the first peri-
od on a goal by
Trevor Liddle.
But with two sec-
onds left in the peri-
od, the Hawks tied it
on a goal from Scott
Davies.
Lucan took the lead
again in the second
period with a goal
from Pat Flood to
take a 2-1 lead but
the Hawks again
replied with a power
play marker off the
stick of Jeff Smale.
The Hawks took
over in the third
outscoring the Irish
3-1 with Greg
Thompson and Darcy
McCutcheon scoring
for Exeter with Liddle
replying for the Irish
Davies scored into
an empty net in the
last minute to seal
the win.
Dan Moir and Jason
Stuckless each had a
pair of assists in the
win for the Hawks
with singles from
Justin Young, Tim
Bilcke, Drew Bayliff
and Mike MacLean.
Liddle had an assist
to go with two goals
for the Irish with Bob
Martin also picking
up an assist.
Sunday afternoon
the Hawks were
paced by a hat trick
from Davies and two
goals from Stuckless
with singles from
Nesbitt and Elder.
With the season
down to its last week,
playoffs matchups
are still up in the air,
although Howard
said the Hawks are
looking at finishing
third or fourth.
"Worst case sce-
nario for us is fourth,
we're guaranteed
that right now."
