Huron OPP receive several fake 911 calls
HURON — Huron OPP kept busy
last month attending false 911
phone calls.
Officers have responded to 186
with the vast majority non -emer-
gent.
In 2005, Huron OPP received
1,214 calls.
A large majority of these cases
involved a person misdialing a
number or causing the emergency
number to be dialed due to a speed
dial setting.
In a number of cases children
playing with telephones has been
identified as a cause for the call.
When a call is placed to 911 it's
treated as an emergency call for
help.
If no information is available on
what services are needed, which is
the case if the caller hangs up or
says nothing, then police are dis-
patched to the location where the
call originated to make certain help
isn't needed.
This call results in two officers
dispatched and becomes a priority
call.
False calls could result in a delay
of service to someone needing
assistance.
Huron OPP ask the public to be
aware of the number dialed when
phoning out.
