Hawks in stretch run
By Pat Bolen
TIMESOADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — After a loss earlier in
the week versus Thamesford, the
Exeter Hawks rebounded by rolling
over the Belmont Bombers before
playing what coach and general
manager Dale Howard described as
one of their best of the year, with a
3-1 win in Lambeth Sunday night
despite a shorthanded lineup.
The wins keep Exeter within sight
of Mitchell, which is four points
ahead of Exeter and in first place in
the conference with 44 points.
Exeter remains in second with a
record of 19-12-1-1 and 40 points
and has played one more game than
Mitchell. Wellesley and Delhi are tied
for first overall with 53 points.
The Hawks were in Thamesford
Jan. 11 and fell behind early with the
Trojans taking a 2-0 lead in the first
period and never giving it up on the
way to a 4-2 win.
"We came out flat at the beginning,
but we do that a lot," said Howard.
"we came out not prepared to play
the first. They got up 3-0 and we had
to fight back."
Howard said he hasn't made any
acquisitions yet since there are fewer
players available with Junior `B'
teams having two extra cards this
year. "There wasn't a lot of roster
changes by anybody in this league."
With the Hawks finishing up their
regular season schedule against
Mitchell Feb. 10, Howard said it
would be important in terms of more
than just the standings. "We need to
play an extremely tough game
against them...it's all in the head."
Scott Davies and Craig Masse sup-
plied all the offence the Hawks would
get on the night, but it was a differ-
ent story Saturday night in Belmont.
Four goals in the first period from
Ryan Abrams, Troy Elder, Jamie
Wolfe and Davies put the Hawks
ahead to stay as they cruised to a 10-
4 win.
The Bombers tried to get back in
the game in the second with three
goals of their own but the Hawks put
the game away with three more
goals from Jeff Smale, Davies,
Abrams.
Elder and Smale each added their
second of the game in the third with
Davies completing his hat trick.
Abrams had three assists in the
win with Smale and Elder each get-
ting assists. Singles came from Wolfe,
Justin Young and Tony Regier.
Sunday night in Lambeth the
Hawks were short players for several
reasons with Jason Stuckless out
with a charlie horse and Chad Snell
missing due to a knee injury.
The Hawks were also missing Brett
Nicholson with a bruised thumb and
lost Elder with a broken skate.
A short lineup got even smaller
with Tony Regier and Mike MacLean
with tossed with game misconducts.
Of the seven games remaining for
the Hawks, only one will be on the
road when Exeter visits West Lorne
Feb. 8.
The Hawks have two games this
week starting Friday when Lucan
visits at 8:30 p.m. before North
Middlesex is in town for an 7:30 p.m.
game Sunday. It will be Precious
Blood school night at the Rec Centre
Friday night.
Sherwoods drive
towards playoffs
HENSALL — The Hensall Sherwoods stayed in
the race for playoff spots with a pair of wins last
week, defeating the Palmerston 81's and the
Lucan/Ilderton Jets.
The Sherwoods have 31 points, seven back of
league leading Durham, with Elora in second with
37. Clinton, Lucan, Tavistock and Lucknow are
tied with 33 while Shelburne has 32.
The 81's were in Hensall Jan. 11 which was also
a benefit game for the children of Palmerston
player Kevin Beaumont, who was killed in a traffic
accident recently.
Donations at the game raised $671 with players
adding another $100.
Palmerston took an early lead in the first period
before the Sherwoods came back with five straight
goals, including four in the third period.
Nick Regier put the Sherwoods on the board in
the second before Jeremy VanBergen, Jeff Glover
and Dave Farquhar with two powered the
Sherwoods to a 5-2 win.
Hensall was at home to face Lucan Friday night
and took early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 on goals from
Mark Landon but it was all Hensall after that.
After Chris Downie got the Sherwoods started in
the first, Chris Kennedy tied it in the second.
Hensall fired five more from Jeff Finkbeiner, JR
Davies, Jeremy Geoffrey, Regier and Farquhar for
a 7-2 win.
The Sherwoods have two games this weekend
starting with Clinton visiting Saturday for a game
which was to have started at 7:30 p.m. The game
has been moved to 4:30 p.m. because of the
Bayfield/Clinton/Hensall minor hockey night. the
game will have door prizes for BCH players and a
beef dinner and dance afterward with a $20
admission.
Hensall will finish the regular season with a
home game against Goderich Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Silver stick champions
MOORETOWN — Four for-
mer South Huron hockey
players were part of the
Bayfield/Clinton/Hens all
(BCH) juvenile team which
won the North American
Silver Stick in Mooretown
earlier in January.
Curtis Pfaff, Adam Johns,
Andy Sedlak and Jeff Van
Bergen were part of the
team which won the right to
go to the tournament by win-
ning the regional qualifier
earlier in the season in
Lucknow.
The team started the
weekend right with a 5-1
win over Dresden Friday
morning before falling to
Huntsville in a back and
forth 6-4 game later that
night.
Saturday morning's game
was a disaster with the team
losing 5-1 to host team
Mooretown.
Luckily the team won one
period which was just
enough in the point race for
them to squeak into the
semifinals as the last place
team.

This set up a rematch with
first place Huntsville.
It was a close hard fought
game, just like the one BCH
played earlier in the tourna-
ment but this time BCH
carne out on top 4-2.
In the finals BCH got their
wish to have a rematch with
host team Mooretown.
This game was anything
but close with BCH dominat-
ing the competition and win-
ning by a score of 6-2
becoming the North America
`B' Division Silver Stick
champions.
Senior girls volleyball results
EXETER — The South Huron District High School senior girls volleyball team was in
Clinton Jan. 10 and came away with two wins.
The Panthers defeated St. Anne's 25-17, 18-25 and 26-24 before facing Central Huron
and posting scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-22.
The Panthers came back from a 12-20 deficit against St. Anne's to win.
Outstanding players in the win were Kylen Van Osch, Blair Kittur and Michelle
Desjardine.
The team will also be taking part in tournaments in Stratford, Ingersol and Goderich this
season. They were also semifinalists at the Strathroy tournament in losing to Goderich.
