(photos/Scott Nixon) Jets blanked 1-0 LUCAN — The Lucan/Ilderton Jets had a tough weekend with a pair of losses to Hensall and Lucknow but remain in the middle of the league playoff race, tied with Clinton, Tavistock, and Lucknow at 33 points, five back of league leading Durham. "Unfortunately, it was to a couple of teams we real- ly needed to beat," said Jets general manager Rob Andrews. The Jets took an early lead but couldn't hold the Sherwoods who fired six straight for a 7-2 win. The Jets were down early against Lucknow after taking a penalty in the first minute and giving up a goal and it was all the offence the Lancers need- ed. "They totally dominated the first period," said Andrews. "Our guys looked really tired." The Jets rebounded in the next two periods tak- ing the play to the visitors but couldn't beat Lucknow goalie Jason Reid. The Jets have a pair of games this weekend with a game in Durham Friday at 8:30 p.m. before visiting Georgian Bay Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. EXETER — The South Huron District High School girls hockey team faced Goderich District Collegiate Institute Jan. 10. Coach Heather Strano said despite it being a sluggish game due to two weeks off, the Panthers had a strong second period and with Samantha Regier playing well in net, South Huron came away with an 8-2 win. The Panthers got three goals in the first period from Ashley Gallagher, Emily Sararas and Keri Reschke and added four more in the second. Gallagher and Sararas each got their second and Michele Weber and Katie Stewart added one apiece for a 7-1 lead after two periods. Stewart capped the scoring in the third with her second of the day. But in their second game of the day, the Panthers faced Madill. The Panthers played an excellent first half of the game according to Strano, with a 3-1 lead. But Madill woke up and took advantage of South Huron mistakes and mental breakdowns. Stewart and Sararas put the Panthers up 2-0 in the first and each added another in the second. With Gallagher adding another in the third, the Panthers had a 5-4 lead with five minutes left in the game but couldn't hold on facing great pressure from Madill. The Panthers came out on the short end of a 6-5 loss. Strano said she knows South Huron can beat Madill and can hopefully put it altogether when it really counts in the playoffs. The Panthers last mini tourna- ment is today (Wednesday) in Clinton versus CHSS and St. Anne's. At the St. Thomas Aquinas tourna- ment in London before Christmas, Strano said the team played some of their best hockey yet winning the 'B' division. The Panthers opened the tourna- ment with a 5-1 win over Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School before losing to Whitby 3-1. South Huron then faced off against Glencoe and came away with a 3-1 win. After a 4-0 win over Ingersoll, the Panthers took on Holy Cross in the `B' final and emerged with a 4-1 win. In their second match against Central Huron the Panthers won three straight games, two quite eas- ily and one by a score of 30-28. Sandra Gregus, Lauren Haberer, Natalie Hayes, Marlee Baehnisch and Evelyn Johns were leaders in the serving position. Kelsey Hern, Lauren Haberer and Lindsay Jayne Hayter played smartly at the net with great digs by Rosie VanElswyk and Natalie Hayes. Evelyn Johns used her `head' in one play to score a point.
