Moose dies after colliding with truck By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN — A moose believed to be a one -year-old bull was killed when it collided with a Ford pickup truck Jan. 10. The driver, 41 -year-old Robert Spruytte of Ailsa Craig was not injured in the collision which occurred at 12:30 a.m. southbound on Neil Road just south of Clandeboye Drive in Lucan Biddulph. A moose was reported on Neil Road Dec. 29 by the Lamb family. Spruytte says he knew of the moose sighting and was not sur- prised to see a moose that evening. He feels bad about hitting the ani- mal. "Yeah, it's not a great thing," says Spruytte." Spruytte says he wasn't going fast in his truck but the moose darted in front of his vehicle just like a deer would and he was unable to avoid hitting it. Spruytte says his pickup truck has minimal damage, "It doesn't look too bad, there's not a lot of dam- age." The moose was crippled in the collision and for humane purposes a Middlesex OPP officer had to shoot the animal. Moose sightings have been report- ed throughout Middlesex and Lambton counties over the past two months. It is rare to see a moose in Southern Ontario. Moose, the largest member of the deer family are found mainly in Northern Ontario. The standing committee heads gave their reports. The visiting committee for the next four months are group U, Diane Jeffery; Group C, Agnes Bray and Group W, Shirley Cooper. The ladies are having their annual chicken supper on Feb. 26 at the rec. centre in Exeter. The annual meeting of the church is on Feb. 5 with the finance committee hosting a poor boy luncheon prior to the meeting. The ladies are catering to the Oddfellow and Rebekahs' friend- ship night banquet on Mar. 25 at Kirkton Rec. Centre, also to a wedding in June. The meeting closed with every- one repeating the UCW prayer. A delicious lunch and beverage prepared by Helen Kadey, Jean Hodgert, Margaret Stewart and Nancy Smith was partaken of by the ladies which brought an enjoy- able evening to a close. Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello How's the quitting smoking coming along? Ifs never too late to stop the habit. Your body starts to bounce back on the first day of no smoking. Besides all the health benefits, we can't forget the financial benefits as well. Keep up the good work! Many people enjoy a little bit of alcohol in their life. If you both smoke and drink alcoholic beverages, the risk of cancer-causing diseases from smoking goes up tremendously. Another reason to stop smoking. And while we are on the subject of drinking alcohol, the risk of atrial fabrillation (an irregular heart beat that can cause a stroke), is lowest in teatotallers, slightly higher in moderate drinkers lup to 14 drinks per week) but really jumps in those who have 35 or more drinks per week. OK. Enough doom and gloom! Here's some good news for insulin-dependent diabetics. A new inhaled form of insulin will soon be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It will be named 'Exubera'. It is a rapid -acting insulin and is as effective as the equivalent injected insulin. Not available in Canada yet. Huron Apothecary Ltd.
