Family helps support the fight against cancer
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — After hear-
ing the news just a couple
of months ago that her
husband Jamie had
Leukemia, Danielle Oke
wanted to help in some
way to fight cancer.
The Okes of Exeter have
two young daughters,
five-year-old Mackenzie
and three-year-old Erin.
Danielle, Mackenzie and
Erin have begun making
bracelets, called "Love
Beads For Leukemia" to
help support Leukemia
research at London
Health Sciences Cancer
Centre.
The idea for the
bracelets came from 10 -
year -old Leena Bourne
from Petrolia whose
father is battling
Leukemia.
Danielle contacted
Leena's mother and said
she was interested in
making the bracelets, too.
Danielle, Mackenzie and
Erin have made about
150 bracelets since the
middle of November.
The girls are too young
to know everything about
their father's illness but
get excited about making
the bracelets.
"Mackenzie is a great
salesperson at the hospi-
tal," says Danielle.
Many of the bracelets
have been sold at the
London Health Sciences
Centre.
Danielle says besides
helping a good cause, the
bracelets have also been
like therapy for her.
"I was able to think
about something else. It
was actually a good time
passer when Jamie was
in the hospital," Danielle
says.
The bracelets are made
mainly at home in the
evening, allowing
Danielle, Mackenzie and
Erin to spend time togeth-
er while raising money
for a good cause.
The bracelets are $5
