Hawks rebound after 5-1 loss in Mitchell
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — "We had a
goalie and maybe two
players playing well, the
rest of the team
were still on a
bus somewhere
else." said Exeter
coach and gener-
al manager Dale
Howard.
The Hawks
were in Mitchell
Friday night
where Exeter
came out on the
short end of a 5-
1 score.
Exeter has a 17-11-1-1
record for 36 points, two
back of Mitchell which is
first in the division and
conference with 38
points. Lambeth holds
down second with 37
while North Middlesex is
just behind with 34.
Despite the score,
Howard said Exeter
goalie Jordan Thomson
played well and couldn't
be faulted on any of the
goals.
"We didn't play
very well," said
Howard, who
added he was
more concerned
with how the team
would respond in
its next game.
And the Hawks
did, with an 8-4
win in North
Middlesex
Saturday night.
Exeter was down 2-0 by
the end of the first period
Friday night in Mitchell
before Dan Moir could get
them on the board early
in the second period.
But it was all Exeter
could get as Mitchell put
Craig
Masse
the game away with two
more goals in the second
and one in the third for
the 5-1 win.
The Hawks were down
again in the first period
Saturday night again the
Stars on a pair of
goals 43 seconds
apart.
But Howard
said he didn't
have to say much
to the team after
the first period.
"They didn't need
much, they were
pretty motivated."
The Hawks
replied with four
goals in the second
period including a natural
hat trick from Craig
Masse and one from Joe
Nesbitt for a 4-4 tie going
into the third.
The Hawks took the
game away with four
unanswered goals for the
8-4 win.
Powering the offence in
the third were Moir with
a pair and singles from
Darcy McCutcheon and
Troy Elder.
Picking up
assists in the win
were Scott Davies
with four assists,
Jeff Smale,
Masse, Mike
MacLean Chad
Snell, Ryan
Abrams and Tony
Regier, who
Howard said has
rejoined the
team.
The Hawks
have a full schedule this
week with three games
starting Friday night in
Thamesford at 8:30 p.m.
before they visit Belmont
Jan. 14 at 7:45 p.m.
The Hawks will com-
Scott
Davies
plete their week Sunday
night in Lambeth with a
7:45 p.m. game.
"Thamesford is always
tough no matter what,
and Lambeth, we beat
them 4-0 last time, but
we've struggled
with them all
year."
With the roster
deadline Jan. 10,
Howard said he
was looking for a
player to take
faceoffs, although
Ryan Abrams has
been shifted to
centre.
"He's done an
excellent job for
us. he wins his draws and
when he doesn't he
knows what his responsi-
bilities are. He's turning
out to be the faceoff man I
was looking for."
Howard will be behind
the bench for the all-star
game Dec. 21 in Lucan
for the Yeck conference
along with Exeter players
Moir, McCutcheon, goalie
Justin Hayter and trainer
Dennis Pfaff.
Also behind the
bench for the
Yeck conference
will be North
Middlesex Stars
coach Dean
Schram and
Lambeth general
manager and
coach Mike
Herman.
With the play-
offs starting to
get closer,
Howard said the coaching
staff is starting to game
the players in that direc-
tion.
"It's not like a switch
you can flick, you have to
steadily climb that hill."
