In last months commentary we introduced a specialized service at Gary Bean Securities called the Premium Advisory Account. This service offers you access to a team of professionals at our firm, as opposed to an individual advisor. This team strives to maximize your total return while keeping in mind the level of risk exposure that is suitable for an investor like yourself. Today, with the RRSP contribution deadline in mind, we would like to discuss the value of RRSP accounts and contributions and how this type of account differs from a regular investment account. For both investment or RRSP accounts a wide variety of investment products can be used including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, income trust units and GICs. The key difference between the two is the tax consequences relating to each type of account. With RRSP accounts there is a tax deduction for any contributions. During the time that the funds are held inside the RRSP any gains or losses generated by the investment products are sheltered from tax. At the time that funds are removed from the RRSP account 100 % of the withdrawals are taxed as income. With regular investment accounts any money deposited or withdrawn does not produce a tax consequence. Over time any income generated in the investment account is taxed according to its type and when you sell an investment only 50% of your capital gains profits are taxable. Certainly RRSP accounts and contributions are a valuable retirement planning tool and the process of contributing before the end of February to receive the tax benefits for the preceding tax year are well known. At Gary Bean Securities we believe investors can increase their rates of return by simply switching the customary timing of their RRSP contributions and even more importantly we believe that certain investors can benefit from investment strategies that vary from the traditional RRSP contribution cycle. It is easy to stick with the tried-and-true strategy of putting money into an RRSP sometime during January or February. What isn't as easy is critically thinking about this strategy and considering your alternatives. Is it time to evaluate your investment strategy, your current portfolio, and the service that you receive? 1-800-710-5216 235-4099 30 Years Serving The Exeter Community Small Town Values ...
