We invite residents family and friends to generously support those residents taking part by donating to the Huron County Alzheimer Society. Queensway's volunteer auxiliary met Tuesday morning and reviewed the very full schedule of events that took place throughout the month of December. Several choirs and music groups shared their talent throughout the month with the cul- mination of 2005 being the performance by "The Dukes of Dixie" jazz band at the New Year's Eve party. Heartfelt thanks goes to all the wonderful volunteers who assist at special events. The volunteer auxiliary looks forward to a busy 2006 with their volunteerism contributing much to residents' quality of life. Lay Minister Pat Dobbs of Trivitt Anglican Church in Exeter led worship for residents Tuesday afternoon with Belva Fuss as volunteer pianist. Wednesday afternoon Marg Cole organized a Optimist Club hopes to send youths on trip EXETER — The South Huron Lakeshore Junior Optimist Octagon Club is trying to raise enough money for 22 students between the ages of 12 and 18 to attend the annu- al JOOI convention in Nashville, Tenn. The convention will be held July 6 - 8. Amanda Lynn Feeney, who attended last year's convention in New Orleans and plans on attending again this July says the "JOOI convention is an awesome experience, very rewarding. I met amazing people and came back more enthusiastic about helping my community. Everyone should be able to have the chance to attend such a great event." The JOOI convention allows students to learn valuable lessons in com- munication and leadership skills in a creative and fun way. The students also get the chance to meet other kids their age from around the world in this interna- tional convention. The convention has been held for the last 14 years but this is only the second year the South Huron Lakeshore Optimist Club has had the chance to go. Last year the convention was held in New Orleans, but was cut short due to the oncoming hurricane Denis. The cost of sending a sin- gle student on the trip is $575, and with the large number of students wanti- ng to attend it is over- whelming for the still - young organization. The organization is look- ing for people to donate what they can to this cause so as many students as possible may attend. If you would like to send a donation to the South Huron Lakeshore Optimist Club you can do so by sending your donation to Optimist president Allison Neeb at RR 2 Crediton, Ont., NOM 1MO. Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello Teenagers require 9-10 hours of sleep nightly to maintain a healthy mind and body. Unfortunately, over the past 20 years or so, this age group receives an average of 6-7 hours nightly. "Catching up" on the weekend doesn't really work. Bad sleeping habits can start young. Encourage your teen to get a good nights sleep. Exercise is also important for teens. They do get less exercise today than in the past. Forty-five minutes of vigorous exercise per day can help teens feel better physically and mentally. This advice applies to adults as well. January 2006: what a great time to start your exercise program. When you look at graphs charting the incidence of breast cancer worldwide, the U.S., France, UK and Canada are at the top of the list while countries like Japan, Tanzania, India and China are at the bottom with the least number of cases. However, when Japanese women move to North America, their breast cancer rates rise. This could be related to the higher fat content in our diet. The week of January 15-21 is National Non -Smoking Week with January 18 being designated as "Weedless Wednesday". Some people need a motivational deadline to reach certain goals. If stopping smoking is your goal, use this coming week as a stepping -stone to this goal. Ifs a good one! Huron Apothecary Ltd.
