HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2006-01-04, Page 1010 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday, January 4, 2006 Zurich's 150th birthday attended by 150 people About 150 people attended the Bluewater Community Centre in Zurich Jan. 1 to celebrate the town's 150th birthday.Various displays commemorating the last 150 years were on display for everyone.A draw, entertainment and wine and cheese were also part of the celebration.Above front from left are Sesquicentennial com- mittee members Bradley Holmes, Carmel Sweeney, Heather Klopp, Pastor Ann Krueger, Joyce McBeath and Delores Gingerich. Back from left are Alan Brokenshire, John Becker, Fred and Steve Haberer and Marg Deichert. Missing are Mark Weigand, Hubert Thiel, Frank lhrig and Doris Hamilton. Below, Ken Thiel of Zurich stands beside his doctor's buggy on display at the event. It was made in the late 1800s.The buggy bought in the fall and restored mainly by Thiel will be used on his horse farm. Draw tickets were available during the event.Three items are part of the draw. First prize is the stained glass art made and donated by Bob Krueger of The Glass Palate, second prize is a log cabin queen size quilt donated by the Quilter's Guild and third prize are four Zurich heritage site porcelain plates.Above, from left are Krueger showcasing his stained artwork, Cecelia Farwell and Doris Hamilton of the Quilter's Guild and Sesquicentennial committee chairperson Joyce McBeath. The proceeds earned through the draw will benefit the Bluewater Community Development Foundation.The draw is scheduled for the end of the year. A history book was launched celebrating Zurich's 150th birthday.The author of the book is the manag- er for both the Zurich and Clinton libraries, Michael Dawber. He could not attend the event but will be recognized at a later date for his work.Above from left are Marg Deichert and son Bradley Holmes sell- ing the book, called "Zurich, Ontario 150 1856-2006 Sesquicentennial,' and sells for $ I0. Above, Dorothy Dietrich flips through a book of pic- tures, just one of the many books on display. Dietrich says she recognizes some of the people in the book.
