Source protection support encourages ABCA

recent
announcement
made by the
government to
support source
protection is
encouraging
staff at the
Ausable Bayfield
and Maitland
V alley
Conservation
Authorities.
Staff say the
introduction of
the Clean Water
Act (Bill 43) is an
important step
towards ensur-
ing safe water
sources for all
Ontarians.

have an obliga-
tion to care for
our rivers, lakes,
streams and
groundwater,
now and in the
Scott's Elevator recently picked their annual colouring contest winners.
The contest which has taken place annually for about 20 years is judged
on effort, originality, style and detail.This year about 1 10 children partici-

quality have
motivated
Conservation
Ontario and its
member author-
ities to work
even closer with
the province and
other stakehold-
ers. These
include munici-
palities and the
farming commu-
nity and indus-
try
They are
working on pro-
viding expertise
in developing
the best
approach to
source water.
There are vari-
ous watershed
management
programs
offered at the
Ausable Bayfield
and Maitland
Valley
Conservation
Authorities.
Brown says,
"We have been
building our sci-
entific knowl-
edge regarding
the quantity and
quality of water
in our area.
"Because they
are structured
on a watershed
basis, the
Authorities are
able to co-ordi-
nate and
streamline local
delivery of water
management
and planning
activities to pro-
tect drinking
water at the
source."
Brown adds
they are looking
forward to
strengthening
partnerships in
this important
work.
Conservation
Ontario repre-
sents Ontario's
36 conservation
authorities.
The authorities
are local, com-
munity-based
environmental
organizations
managing natur-
al resources
with a focus on
water.
