The South Huron Hospital Auxiliary pre- sented a $50,000 cheque to the IIospital Foundation Dec. 13. The money will go towards the purchase of a new digital x- ray and ultra- sound machine, known as a Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS). Foundation chairperson Matt Clarke said the machine alone costs $900,000, and, while not all fig- ures are in, costs could be well over $2 million by the time upgrades to the emergency department are included. The purchase of the machine and upgrades to the ER are required, Clarke says, adding the radiology equip- ment in the hos- pital is 15 years old. The new digi- tal x-ray and ultrasound machine will allow images to be seen any- where — doc- tors won't have to be on-site to see them. X-rays and ultrasounds will be stored on a computer in a digital archive. Clarke said the new machine will speed up treatment. He expressed his gratitude last week to the Hospital Auxiliary. "It never ceas- es to amaze me," he said of the donation, noting that it shows the mem- bers' dedication. "The ongoing support of the Auxiliary over the years has greatly assisted in the purchase of much needed patient related equipment, improvements and renovations to support patient care." He said the amount of hours Auxiliary mem- bers volunteer for the hospital is incalculable. Huron Park update Continued from front page Brown's report to council Monday night stated that another reason for allowing the ORC to have Crown Right is that, since the land is already developed, the municipality's normal approvals process "May be of little public value. As well, the ORC have committed to comply with any reasonable conditions that South Huron might impose." Morley, who said there is a "gag order" on the negotia- tions, said giving Crown Right to ORC to allow them to proceed with land transfers is good news for any busi- nesses looking to buy property in the park. He said he hasn't heard if there has been any interest expressed in the former Centralia College or the run- ways. REGIONAL WRAP UP • Zambian kids going to school CLINTON — Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) community and area residents have surpassed their goal to send 90 Zambian children to school next month, according to the Clinton News -Record. Jessica Bokhout, a CHSS graduate and a fourth-year University of Toronto student co-oping in the International Development Studies program sent DVDs to friends in the Clinton area this fall, asking them to raise $6,300. Bokhout is pleased with the community support "With the money you've raised, children will go to school in January wearing a new uniform and carrying a new school bag." Special dinner planned GODERICH — A dinner is planned for people spend- ing Christmas alone. Neal Nickles is organizing with the help of volunteers the third Christmas Dinner For Those Alone. According to the Goderich Signal -Star, Nickles is expecting at least 36 people this year which is how many participated last year. The dinner is scheduled at Knox Church beginning at 3 p.m. on Dec. 25. Christmas Bureau pleased SEAFORTH — The Seaforth branch of the Huron County Christmas Bureau is confident the 50 regis- tered families with 110 children will have a happy Christmas, according to The Huron Expositor. Manager of the Seaforth branch Janneke Murray says, "Seaforth's got a good reputation for being gener- ous but I'm still amazed at how much has come in." Murray says the 25 boxes of food and toys donated put the bureau "over the top" for food donations. Last year 56 families and 139 children participated. Clarke said renovations to the ER will accommodate the new PACS machine and "ensure infec- tion control standards are met and we have a safe envi- ronment for our patients, med- ical staff, physi- cians and staff in the emergency department." Auxiliary chairperson Pat Down said the money was raised from the rummage sales, quilt draw and hospital gift shop sales. The South Huron Hospital Auxiliary made a $50,000 donation to the Hospital Foundation last week.
