Exeter Times–Advocate
All-star basketball hosted by SHDHS
EXETER — The South
Huron District senior girls
basketball team wrapped
up their season recently
and coach Phil Conley and
assistant coach Mandy
Migchels thank all the
players for a successful
season.
The team had a record
of 16 wins and 11 losses
and were seven and three
in league play for fourth
place, which Conley said
was impressive taking
into account a key injury
to their leading scorer
Kylen Van Osch, who was
averaging 15 points a
game until a midseason
ankle injury.
The addition of Melissa
Smith however at point
guard, added speed and
scoring to the team and
Conley said Maggie
Roberts and Janine
Malcolm added leadership
and scoring in Van Osch's
absence.
Freshmen Missy
Pertschy and Janelle Erb
stepped into some key
rebounding and shooting
roles in the later part of
the season.
Other team members
Shannon Clarke, Sierra
Douglas and Stephanie
Dietrich added defensive
grit and depth to a team
somewhat shortened on
the bench due to some
unfortunate moves and
withdrawals from the
original team of 12 play-
ers.
Highlights of the season,
according to Conley would
be a game against one of
the province's best,
Rockway Mennonite,
which won a bronze
OFSAA 'A' medal.
Other standout games
were against Woodstock
St. Marys Catholic School
in the Banting tourna-
ment and the Parkhill
tournament, where the
Panthers managed two
wins against the eventual
WOSSAA `AA'bronze
medal winner and a con-
solation championship in
the Banting tournament.
Special thanks from the
coaching staff go to grad-
uating team members
Kylen Van Osch, Janine
Malcolm and Shannon
Clarke who have been the
backbone of the team for
two years and will be
missed by the entire
team.
Conley said the all-star
games hosted by SHDHS
Dec. 8 were a great suc-
cess with all the South
Huron players doing the
school proud and playing
well.
Seniors Smith and Van
Osch both scored 10
points for the Huron -
Perth white team. Conley
thanks all the volunteers
who helped run the
games smoothly, includ-
ing Amy Turkheim,
Kaitlyn Davis, Missy
Pertschy, Eric Cosman as
well as Artemsia
Fragiskatos.
Having good help makes
hosting an event like this
easier and more success-
ful, said Conley.

Senior boys basketball
EXETER — The South
Huron District High
School senior boys bas-
ketball team opened their
season Dec. 7 with a 55-
35 loss to Mitchell.
Coach Terry O'Rourke
said the team tried hard
but inexperience was the
story of the day as there
are a number of players
who have played little or
no high school basketball.
O'Rourke said they are
working hard however
and will definitely show
improvement down the
road.
J.T Knee led the way
with 11 points followed
by Tyler Robinson,
Spencer Baehnisch, Eric
Cosman, Seth Weber and
A.J Miller with four
points each.
The senior boys com-
peted in the St. Marys
tournament on the week-
end.
On Friday they lost their
first game 63-37 to
Regina Mundi.
Baehnisch had 11 points
followed by Tyler Knip
with seven and Cosman
with six.
On Saturday, the
Panthers defeated North
Middlesex 65-30. Cosman
had 13 points, followed
by Robinson and
Baehnisch with nine and
Knip, Roger Mills and
Jordan McAuslan with six
each.
In the consolation final,
the Panthers defeated St.
Marys 48-26. Robinson
and Knee each had 13
points, Jeff Thomavongsa
with eight, Mills with six
and Weber had four.
All in all the team
showed a lot of improve-
ment and everyone made
positive contributions,
said O'Rourke. Well done.

Sherwoods
lose two
HENSALL — The Hensall
Sherwoods lost a pair of road
games on the weekend, with a 4-3
loss in Clinton Friday night before
being blanked 3-0 in Lucknow
Sunday afternoon.
Hensall sits in fifth place with a
record of 10-4-0-0 for 20 points,
six back of first place Shelburne.
Friday night in Clinton the
Sherwoods had a 2-1 lead after
one period on goals from Jeff
Glover and Chris Kennedy.
But the Radars tied it with the
only goal of the second period
before firing a pair in the final
period for a 4-3 win.
JR Davies had the lone goal of
the third period for the Sherwoods
with Kennedy, Glover, Adam
McCann and Scott Richardson
picking up assists in the loss.
With only 13 skaters Sunday
afternoon in Lucknow, the
Sherwoods were down 1-0 going
into the third.
But a pair of Lucknow goals put
the game away in the 3-0 loss.
The Sherwoods are on the road
again this weekend with a Dec. 17
game in Shelburne at 8 p.m.
Novice win
EXETER — The South Huron
Novice local league #1 team trav-
elled to Watford Dec. 3.
Nathan MacDonald opened the
scoring at 9:25 but Watford
responded just seven seconds
later.
Good playmaking by both teams
in the first period meant
forechecking was the key.
But South Huron was the better
passing team in the first when
Paige Lightfoot scored assisted by
MacDonald and Mitch Miller.
The second period was fast
paced with few shots on goalie
Owen Kuranyi thanks to good
defence by Denver Homuth, Ryan
Neeb, Harrison Winters and Kean
Dwyer.
Making strong contributions in
the 3-2 win were the Jared
Denotter, Patrick Medd and Brody
Reid line and the Regier, Jeremy
I-Irudka and Dillon Ilaist line.
