The Panthers took on Stratford Northwestern in their first game and came up against a good goalie. Coach Heather Strano said the team came out slow but picked it up mid- way through the first period. The Panthers received strong games from Emily Sararas and Michele Weber as well as goalie Samantha Regier who was playing her first game and stopped a breakaway. South Huron received goals from Weber and Sararas in the first period and one more in the sec- ond from Ashley Gallagher. Leading 3-1 going into the third period the Panthers took over with Sararas getting two goals and Kristin Ferguson get- ting one for a 6-1 Panther win. Game two against Madill was just 40 min- utes later and Strano said many of the players had been in six or seven games in the past three days and had several physical and mental breakdowns. She added although the Panthers didn't play their best game, sararas, Katie Stewart and Phillips played excellently. Regier came in halfway through the game and played strong, Strano said. The Panthers received a pair of goals from Sararas in the second period and one from Stewart in the third but it wasn't enough in a 5-3 loss. "Hopefully next time we meet them, we'll be play- ing at our best. Madill is a very strong physical and fast team," said Strano. Jeff Baker and Reid Halpenny were picked for the team which took on the Perth all-stars. Huron defeated Perth by scores of 25-19, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-2. Reid was selected as the Huron player of the match. Each coach in the Huron -Perth area schools nominated players for the teams who were then voted on by all the coaches. Halpenny played both left and right hitter while Baker played the middle position. The SHDHS students said while the senior boys team didn't have their best season, it was a fun year. While the game is intended as a fun event, Halpenny said there is still pride on the line for the players. "No one really likes Perth...Stratford thinks they are pretty good."
