Do you know your Hospital
Foundation Members?
THE SOUTH HURON HOSPITAL FOUNDATION MEMBERS ARE VOLUNTEERS
WHO SERVE ON THE FOUNDATION AS REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
COMMUNITY SERVED BY THE HOSPITAL. OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS,
WE WILL INTRODUCE YOU TO THE MEMBERS OF OUR FOUNDATION.
VERLA RUSSELL
Verla Russell (nee Smith) was born and raised in Exeter. She
attended South Huron District High
School and later Wells Academy in
London. She returned to Exeter to
marry Jim Russell.
Verla has been involved with the
Hospital Auxiliary for several years,
serving one term as President. She
is a life member of the Auxiliary
and Vice-president of our region of
the Auxiliary Association of
Ontario. She has also been very
active with the South Huron
Hospital Board, serving on many
committees and acting as Board
Chair for one term as well. She
recently completed a stint on the
Community Action Committee of
the Huron Perth District Health
Council.
Jim and Verla have two sons, 34 year-old Scott who lives in
London and works in Strathroy and Mark, 32, who lives in
Stratford and Verla is a member of the Allocation and Finance
Committee of the South Huron Hospital Foundation.

Last time, we learned about the Hospital Foundation,
essentially a fundraising arm of the hospital which assists in
allocating the funds raised on its behalf. This week, we look
at the very existence of South Huron Hospital itself.
South Huron exists essentially because of the Emergency
Department, provision of in-patient care and clinics. Although
it performs many other functions as well, the community sees
it primarily as a provider of immediate response 24 hours a
day every day of the week, treating accidents, trauma and
medical emergencies. (We all remember a few years ago
when it was not manned by local doctors on weekends and
the uproar caused within the entire community.) If there were
no Emergency Department, there would be no access to
emergency services in the south Huron catchment area.
To sustain the environment required to provide excellence in-
patient care, renovations to the Emergency Department are
essential.
There area three primary reasons why this hospital's
emergency operations require upgrades :
1. the need to improve the quality of the air
in the Emergency Department,
2. the potential of infection and
3. the outmoded technology
SARS, Walkerton, Aylmer, mad cows, Asian Bird Flu and a
host of other reasons have prompted governments and
society to demand excellence in health care. Standards have
been implemented to focus on safety for patients, visitors
and staff. As patients, we probably all applaud this move,
but as a result, every hospital now faces the same pressures
— the necessity to raise funds to make these improvements.
The Foundation's mandate, as was mentioned last time, is
to devise ways of securing the financial support from the
community to continue to support and advance local
healthcare. The Foundation will have to look at the three
areas to be addressed, with the co-operation of the Hospital
and its physicians. Collectively we ask you, the residents of
South Huron, North Middlesex and North Lambton for ideas
and incentives to raise the funds to ensure South Huron
Hospital Association remains current to provide the best
services to our communities.
NEXT TIME, WE'LL LOOK SPECIFICALLY AT THOSE THREE MAJOR
CHALLENGES.
Marg Hayter introduced Trish McGregor as the guest
speaker. Trish spoke on 'What Christmas Means to Her -
A Season of Reflection and Celebration of Christmas
Faith' and what they meant to her. She ended her talk
with "No Matter How You Celebrate Remember the
Reason for the Season". Joyce Dowson thanked Trish.
Bonnie Roy read a poem "Let's Never Grow Too Old".
The ladies were favoured with two songs "I Saw
Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", and another Christmas
song by Alysha Dowson.
The Stan Lee Club meet Tues., Dec. 13 at the complex
for their Christmas party. Supper at 6 p.m. with special
entertainment to follow.
Worship service was held in Varna church on Sunday
with Pastor Elly Van Bergen with the welcome. Sunday
School children Jacob Govier, Stephen and Kelly Consitt
took part in the lighting of the Candle of Peace for the
second Sunday of Advent followed by Annie McBride
singing "I've Got Peace Like A River".
Deb Rathwell and Pastor Elly portrayed a skit on
"What Are You Looking For?" -a White Gift Skit. This
skis was portraying How we are so busy thinking about
ourselves, we should think... do we really need it! The
true meaning of White Gift is to Give To Those Who
Really Need Them!
The choir's gift of music was "Gifts for Him". Pastor
Elly's message was "The Busyness Desert , The
Wilderness Trap". The commissioning was sung "Go
Tell It On The Mountain" followed by the blessing.
