By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The
Exeter Hawks
were in
Thamesford Nov.
25 and edged the
Trojans 3-2 to
improve their
record to 11-7-1-0
for 23 points.
Exeter is four
points back of Mitchell
with a game in hand.
North Middlesex is three
points back of
Exeter with Lucan
having 18 points.
Mitchell contin-
ues to lead the
conference with
Lambeth one
behind at 26.
Wellesley leads
the league overall
with 33 points.
Jamie Wolfe had
the lone goal of the
first period with the
Trojans replying in the last
minute of the second for a
1-1 tie going into the third.
But the Hawks outscored
the Trojans in the third
with Dan Moir putting the
Hawks ahead early in the
period.
Joe Nesbitt got the win-
ner with six minutes left
on an Exeter power. The
Trojans made it a 3-2
game with a power play
goal of their own with
three minutes left, but the
Hawks hung on for the
win.
Craig Masse and Justin
Young each had a pair of
assists in the win with
Scott Davies and Nesbitt
getting singles.
Justin
Hayter
Although
the Hawks
were outshot
49-22, they
were backed
up by strong
goaltending
from Justin
Hayter who
was praised
by Exeter
coach and
general man-
ager Dale Howard.
"When he plays, there
isn't a better goalie in the
league," said
Howard who
added Hayter
will be a
strong candi-
date to be
selected for
the all-star
game in
Lucan Jan.
21.
Goaltenders
will be
picked based on
averages as of Dec. 31
with skaters provided to
the league convener by
Dec. 15.
Howard added underager
Troy Elder has brought
everything the team was
expecting at the start of
the year.
"On the weekend we
moved him into Stuckless's
spot on the top line and he
was phenomenal. He's the
same size as Stucky so he
kind of controls the
boards."
Howard added Elder is
the same type of player as
Stuckless, "tough and grit-
ty."
"Troy is going to be a
real mainstay if he stays
Jamie
Joe N
esbitt
Wolfe
here , " s a i d
Howard.
The Hawks are
losing a couple of
players with the
departure of Paul
Denomme who has
joined the
Canadian Forces
and will be
departing in early
January as well as
Ryan Knee who
has resigned from the
team.
The Hawks have a pair of
games this week
besides their game
in Lucan. They
visit West Lorne
Dec. 3 at 7:15 p.m
before they are in
Mitchell Sunday
night at 7 p.m.
"We've only
played three
games this year
we didn't deserve
to win," said
Howard. "Every
other game we had a
chance to win."
The next Hawk's School
Night at the South Huron
Rec Centre will be Dec. 9
which is Usborne Public
School Night when the
Hawks take on the West
Lorne Lakers.
It will also be the Hawk's
Annual Teddy Bear Toss.
The Christmas Bureau
has also expressed a need
for sleepwear so donations
are appreciated instead of
Teddy Bears.
All sleepwear donated
should be in a plastic bag
if possible.

Gillespies purchase ball team
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
STRATFORD — The
Stratford Storm of the
InterCounty Baseball
League will take to the field
in 2006 with new ownership
and a new name after the
purchase of the team by
Shawn Gillespie of Lucan
and John Gillespie of St.
Joseph.
The Storm have been
renamed the Stratford
Nationals and will be play-
ing their games at National
Stadium.
Shawn, who was with the
London Majors this season,
will be general manager of
the team .
He said the deal to pur-
chase the team was thought
about by the Gillespies since
early into the season after
learning the team was for
sale.
After a difficult season in
which the Storm went 1-33,
Shawn said the Gillespies
will be looking at a mix of
older and younger players
both to make the team com-
petitive and build for the
future.
"Our long term vision is to
try and develop the local
talent to being able to play
at that level."
As well as the role of gen-
eral manager, Shawn will
be on the mound for the
Nationals and says his arm
feels good after surgery two
years ago.
He compiled a record of
9-4-3 with in 46 innings and
says, "this year was good.
It's still not 100 per cent,
but it kept improving.
According to Shawn, the
team management will be
evaluating the roster to see
who will be coming back,
although he added there
would probably "be not too
many," returning.
Coaches for the team are
also being looked at, but
nothing has been decided
on, said Shawn who added
the response from the com-
munity has been good.
"I haven't really gotten out
in the community and start-
ed knocking on doors...but
the general indication is
they are very excited to
have new ownership and
have the team return to a
competitive form.
"It's a really good sports
town. They've had very
good teams there in the past
and I think they're used to
that...I'm assuming I'm
building it from scratch pri-
marily focusing on pitching
and defence, but we need
everything.
"The two key things are
fundraising and player
recruitment. The most suc-
cessful teams in the league
are the best at those two
things."
Shawn said the team will
also be running a baseball
school for players age 8-18
running from Nov. 27 to
March 19 at the Stratford
Central Secondary School.
The cost for the school is
$125 per child with each
additional sibling $100.
