Principal's message EXETER — There was considerable confusion last Thursday and Friday when Mother Nature decided to unload her fury on us with the first snowstorm of the season. On both days we were able to make the decision to cancel the buses in plenty of time to notify students and parents, but this time technology let us down. In an attempt to be more efficient, we have changed from notifying the radio stations by phone to sending e-mails. Our current system allows us to send one e- mail to the board office in order to post information on the school and board websites, and a second to a multitude of media outlets, including all the radio stations in London. Apparently the radio stations were inundated with e-mails and had difficulty sorting them all out. This led to delays in getting the informa- tion out on Thursday morning and to some schools being omitted in the announcements on Friday. The problem appears to have been a techni- JEFF cal glitch that has now been corrected: I REABURN guess we will find out for sure whether or not PRINCIPAL'S the problem has been corrected the next time MESSAGE we have to cancel buses. I would like to remind parents and students that when the buses are cancelled, all the local elementary schools are closed. South Huron District High School remains open unless the area highways are closed, which was the case Friday morning at the time the bus cancellation decision was made. When the school is closed, students should not expect to be able to get into the building as there may not be any staff present. Students are advised, therefore, to pay attention to the weath- er forecasts and make sure they take home things they may need not just on the next day but for a day or two beyond that. If the school is open for study purposes, then students may con- sult with any staff who have been able to make it in, pick up books and homework, and so on, but if the school has officially been closed, then access to the school may not be available. On a different note, our Student Services department is run- ning a post -secondary information event for Grade 11 students this Thursday morning (Dec. 1). Students will have the opportu- nity to attend workshops and listen to speakers who will pro- vide them with valuable information on the options available to them once they leave high school. The sessions will focus on apprenticeship opportunities, the expectations of employers, the changing job market in Information Technology and on the programs available at col- lege and university. We will have representatives on hand from the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre, and Marilynne Davies from UWO is returning to provide important information on financial plan- ning for post -secondary education. This should be a very infor- mative event that will hopefully assist our Grade 11 students as they plan for their futures. Finally, I would like to remind parents and students in Grades 9 and 10 that the next official report card will be distributed Dec. 7. This report will provide marks and comments on the year- long courses that students are taking, and the marks and com- ments from the November report will be reprinted so parents and students can see how they are doing in all the courses they are taking.
