As if having a first child
wasn't stressful enough,
Sarah and Adam Verhoog
of Whalen Corners had to
contend with last week's
winter storm when Sarah
went into labour.

Thursday and Friday,
Sarah went into labour
late Thursday night. She
and Adam headed out into
the storm at 12:15 a.m.
Friday, attempting to get
to Stratford General
Hospital to have the baby.
Weather was poor when
they left, with Adam and
Sarah having difficulty
seeing their own driveway
to get out to Highway 23.
Most roads were still open
at the time, although
Sarah says Highway 7
between Elginfield and
Stratford was closed.
The couple, who have
been married for a year
and a half, made it as far
as Prospect Hill southwest
of St. Marys where they
encountered a police
cruiser trying to help a
stuck vehicle. The
Verhoogs stopped to tell
the police officer they
were on their way to
Stratford to deliver a baby.
The officer called an
ambulance to pick them
up.
It took the ambulance an
hour to get from St. Marys
to Prospect Hill and by
then all the roads were
closed.
At one point at Prospect
Hill the ambulance got
stuck and had to be pulled
out by a truck with people
in the back pushing.
Student trustees touring schools
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE T -A
SEAFORTH — Student trustees of
the Avon Maitland District School
Board will be logging some miles
during the 2005-06 school year.
Each year, a different group of stu-
dent trustees — one representative
from each Avon Maitland secondary
school — gathers for a minimum of
two meetings per month, generally
on the same evening as the board's
general meetings. They hear presen-
tations from administrative staff
about different initiatives of the
board, discuss issues related to stu-
dents and sometimes send requests,
inquiries or information bulletins to
the publicly -elected trustees.
Usually, one or two of the student
trustees remains in the Seaforth-
based Avon Maitland headquarters
to attend the public meeting of
board on an observer basis.
Beyond that, there's variability
year by year regarding the degree to
which each group of student
trustees involves itself in board
affairs or student governance issues.
This year, Avon Maitland's student
trustees have taken two unprece-
dented steps toward making them-
selves aware of the viewpoints of
their counterparts both within the
board and beyond.
At a general meeting Nov. 22,
Stratford Northwestern Secondary
School representative Thea
VanDenTempel informed the Avon
Maitland board that student
trustees have begun giving each
other tours of each of the board's
high schools.
Speaking to reporters after the
meeting, she said student trustees
hope to "see how each school is run .
.. so when we talk about stuff that's
going on at the school, we have a
better understanding of what the
other (student) trustee is talking
about."
Tours have already been conduct-
ed at Listowel District Secondary
School and Central Huron
Secondary School in Clinton. The
two Stratford -based high schools are
next on the list, to be visited before
the Christmas break, and the rest of
the tours will be completed in 2006.
Student trustees will also travel
farther afield, however, with repre-

Board.
The conference explores the con-
cept of "character education," which

Sarah says the scariest
moment of the whole
ordeal was when the
ambulance was stuck and
started fishtailing.
With a snowplow escort-
ing the ambulance, Sarah
and Adam eventually
made it to St. Marys
Memorial Hospital, where
they were told they could
go no farther because the
road to Stratford was
closed.
The St. Marys hospital
doesn't deliver babies, a
situation Sarah said was
scary for her. She spent
four hours in St. Marys
until the roads opened
early Friday morning and
she was taken to Stratford
at 6:30 a.m.
Adam describes himself
as relieved when the cou-
ple arrived.
When they made it to
Stratford General
Hospital, everything went
smoothly and Sarah gave
birth to a healthy baby boy
at 2:16 p.m.
Justin weighed in at six
pounds, 12 ounces, and
was born three days early.
He and his mom arrived
home from the hospital
Sunday.
Both Sarah and Adam
said everyone who helped
them get through their
ordeal was helpful and
friendly.
The only downside?
They missed Adam's
brother's wedding in St.
Thomas Friday night.
