Canada's Outstanding
Young Farmers
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — Philip and Luanne
Lynn of Lucan are being honoured
as Canada's Outstanding Young
Farmers of the year.
They own and operate Lynn
Cattle Company and Lynn Crop
Company.
The cattle part of their business is
a single 5,700 head feedlot facility
which finishes over 11,000 head of
cattle per year.
It's grown since 1983 when the
business housed 800 cattle in three
barns.
In 1998 Philip recognized savings
in having his feed stored and
processed on farm.
An on-farm feed plant capable of
mixing all the feed and supplement
for the feedlot was constructed.
All the corn silage, grain corn,
hay and wheat straw is grown by
the Lynns for the feedlot on 4,400
acres.
The Lynns are in the process of
constructing a biogas plant to elimi-
nate the spreading of manure and
produce electricity. They are also
involved in various agricultural and
community organizations.
They have hosted tours of the
feedlot for different groups includ-
ing 4-H, universities and environ-
mental groups.
Seven couples competed from
across Canada in the event held in
Halifax recently.
In March the Lynns were chosen
as Ontario's Outstanding Young
Farmers. That also meant being
allowed to participate at the
National level in Halifax.
Along with another couple, Steve
Reeves and Jessica Francis from
Prince Edward Island, the Lynns
took home the title.
Canada's Outstanding Young
Farmers Program is an annual
event that has been running for 26
years.
There used to be three winners
chosen but now there are only two.
This is the first time the Lynn
family has taken home this award
and they are excited.
"We had three 15 -minute inter-
views and one 15 -minute presenta-
tion to complete on our farm opera-
tion and our community involve-
ment," says Luanne.
"Then we were asked questions
about everything," she adds.
The Lynns say even if they didn't
win it was still worth the trip to
Halifax.
"It was a great opportunity. You
get to meet people from across
Canada and it was a totally positive
experience," says Luanne.
It was the Lynns' first trip out
East. They were taken on a tour of
Halifax including a lobster dinner
in Lunenburg.
When asked what they won for
achieving this success Luanne says,
"The guys got a big silver belt buck-
le and the ladies got a brooch with
the same design on it."
Next year's event is in Saskatoon.
The nomination deadline for
Ontario is next month. If interested
