SH quarterback named as all-time Beefeater

LONDON — A former
South Huron District High
School fquarterback was
named to the 30th
anniversary all-time
London Beefeater team of
the Canadian Junior
Football league recently.
Crediton native Jerry
Lamport was selected by
former players and coach-
es in an on-line and mail -
in balloting process.
Voting began at the
beginning of the 30th
anniversary season and
concluded at the Beefeater
year-end banquet last
weekend at the Huron
House.
Lamport attended South
Huron from 1983-88,
playing four years of
junior and senior football,
winning three Huron -
Perth championships
under the guidance of
coaches Ron Bogart and
Dave Cox.
Lamport said four all
time decade teams were
created with nominees
picked from each team
and voted on.
The announcement of
the winners was made at
the final game of the sea-
son and Lamport was
asked to be the speaker at
the banquet.
"It was a nice honour
and a pleasant surprise,"
said Lamport, whose
career started on the
South Huron football field
in Grade 10.
"There has been quite a
football tradition at South
Huron since 1950...just
being involved in team
sports at high school
makes a big difference in
your high school experi-
ence."
Lamport said the best
year for the team was
Grade 13 when the team
went 6-0 and won the
final 3-1 on a field goal by
Jon O'Connor.
Lamport was also asked
to speak at Bogart's retire-
ment dinner as a repre-
sentative from the 1980s.
"I have a lot of respect
for coach Bogart just sim-
ply because being involved
in football at a higher
level, you have 10 to 15
coaches...at high school he
was all those things."
Describing his style,
Lamport said he was a
"get rid of the ball as
quickly as possible" type
quarterback.
After high school football
changed to four downs in
Lamport's Grade 13 year,
he was able to throw a lot
more especially since he
was allowed to call his
own plays by Bogart.
"He did a good job," said
Bogart. "He was a good
passer and a good play
caller.
"He had a good strong
arm and a good football
mind."
One of the toughest
teams South Huron played
against was Goderich,
according to Lamport.
"It was an arch, bitter
rivalry and we were
always evenly
matched...we were lucky
to come out on the win-
ning end three of four
years."
"I couldn't have imag-
ined losing my final high
school football game 1-
0...it would have been a
bitter pill to swallow."
Through his high school
career, Lamport said the
hardest hits he took were

in practice because of the
quality of the South Huron
defence.
"I got rocked a few times
in practice from Jeff
Dalrymple and Rob
Hoffman hits I'm still
recovering from."
Cox also served as offen-
sive coordinator for the
Beefeaters during the
1991 season in which
Lamport completed 122 of
216 passes (56.5 per cent)
for 1,676 yards and 14
touchdowns.
Lamport's 105.5 quar-
terback rating is a London
Beefeater record. He also
holds three other passing
records for game and sea-
son passing accuracy.
Other South Huron play-
ers on the Beefeaters
included Scott Miller,
Richard Voogel, Rob
Wonnacot, Joe Gower and
Mark Penhale.
In his final game as a
Beefeater in the 1991 sea-
son against the Ottawa
Sooners the Beefeaters
were stopped a field goal
short of a win.
"It was pretty tough tak-
ing the pads off for the last
time because you knew
that was going to be it."
Of the records he holds,
Lamport said he is most
proud of the quarterback
ranking.
"That is kind of the mea-
suring stick from year to
year...it's stood over 30
whole years."
Lamport is still involved
in football as an executive
of the London Minor
Football Association, a 24
team house league with
700 players in three age
divisions from tyke to pee-
wee.
Lamport also thanks his
parents for letting him out
of farm chores to play
football.
"My dad was an only
child on a farm and didn't
get to play football. He
made sure I did get to
play, which was greatly
appreciated," said
Lamport.
"It would have changed
my entire high school
experience not to have
played...there was a really
good atmosphere around
football at South
Huron...it's sad high
school kids don't get a
chance to play."

EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks split a pair of 4-3
games on the weekend,
with a 4-3 overtime win
over Mitchell Friday
night in Exeter before
being edged 4-3 Sunday
night in Lambeth.
The Hawks have a 10-
7-1 record for 21 points,
four back of division and
conference leading
Mitchell.
Exeter coach and gen-
eral manager Dale
Howard said the team
didn't show any rust
after being off for 12
days,"We looked like we
hadn't been off at all
after 12 days rest," said
Howard.
"And last night
(Sunday) we played well
enough to win. We just
didn't get the win."
But it was Mitchell get-
ting the lone goal of the
opening period with a
powerplay marker from
Kyle Verberne.
The teams exchanged
goals in the second peri-
od with Darcy
McCutcheon for Exeter
and Dave Verberne for
Mitchell getting the
offence.
Exeter tied it early in
the final period with a
goal from Jason
Stuckless before Jeff
Smale put Exeter ahead
for the first time midway
through the period.
But the lead didn't hold
up as a Mitchell power
play with just over four
minutes left sent the
game to overtime.
But with just 30 sec-
onds left in the first over-
time, Scott Davies sent
Exeter home with the
win.
Exeter went 0-1 on the
power play with Mitchell
converting two of their
five chances with the
man -advantage and out -
shooting Exeter 34-28.
Picking up assists in the
win were Mike MacLean,
Davies, Joe Nesbitt, Josh
Liddle, Craig Masse, Dan
Moir and Stuckless.
The Hawks were first
on the board Sunday
night in Lambeth with a
power play goal from
Craig Masse and a short-
handed effort from Justin
Young, wrapped around
a Lambeth powerplay
goal.
The Hawks got the only
goal of the second period
with a powerplay marker
from Nesbitt made it 3-1
lead going into the third.
But three goals in the
third from Lambeth,
including two from Paul
Bray a minute apart put
the home team ahead to
stay for the 4-3 win.
The Hawks were 2-6 on
the power play and gave
up one goal on 11
Lambeth chances. Exeter
goalie Justin Hayter
faced 47 shots with the
Hawks firing 43 the
other way.
Making his debut
Sunday night for the
Hawks was 17 year old
defenceman Brett
Nicholson, who the
Hawks acquired from
West Lorne and who
Howard said adds some
size to the Exeter lineup.
The Hawks are on the
road this weekend with a
visit to Thamesford
Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
Exeter will visit Lucan
Nov. 30 and has a pair of
road games starting Dec.
3 in West Lorne before
they are in Mitchell Dec.
