The Jets have a 10-1-0 record for
20 points and are tied with
Shelburne.

18 points, but has played only nine
games.

finally defeat the Elora Rocks
Saturday night in Lucan before
rolling over Wingham 7-1 Sunday
afternoon in Lucan.
Saturday night after two scoreless
periods, Elora opened the scoring
three minutes into the third period
before Mark Read tied it on a Jet's
powerplay.
With the game still tied after reg-
ulation and an overtime, the teams'
went to a shootout which was intro-
duced to the league this season.
Andrews said Jets goalie Marc
Williams was outstanding stopping
53 shots for the win, including all
four shots in the shootout.
Todd Hunt and Read each scored
for the Jets in the shootout to take
the 2-1 win.

put the Jets ahead 11 seconds into
the game and Matt McFarlane

A new tool for OPP officers introduced
LUCAN BIDDULPH —
The Ontario Government has approved the
Taser X26 for use by police officers.
Insp. John Stephens and Platoon Sgt. Todd
Mahoney of the Middlesex OPP explained
and demonstrated the new tool at Lucan
Biddulph council Monday night.
Tasers apply an electrical charge to the
body causing temporary motor dysfunction
and providing a safe opportunity for officers
to take control of a violent and unstable per-
son.
The OPP told Lucan Biddulph council the
Taser is used on a person for five seconds.
Mayor Tom McLaughlin asked if the Taser
would have the same effect on everyone.
The OPP say it does, explaining it doesn't
matter if you are overweight, skinny or a
drug abuser.
They also say using a Taser is comparable
to pepper spray.
The Ontario Government and the Ontario
Association of Chiefs of Police have conclud-
ed the tool is safe.
Extensive mandatory training is being pro-
vided to OPP officers and an annual requali-
fication will be required.
Middlesex OPP front line supervisors are
now equipped with Tasers.
The OPP have purchased 605 of them.
Other OPP units based in Middlesex includ-
ing Emergency Response Teams and Biker
Enforcement have also been issued Tasers.
Stephens and Const. Doug Graham also
reported that their Community Oriented
Response (C.O.R.) Unit has issued over 1,900
charges.
C.O.R. was established May 5 of this year
to conduct traffic enforcement throughout
the Middlesex OPP area.
The unit could be deployed to address
community concerns regarding traffic relat-
ed issues.
Their goal is a reduction in the number of
motor vehicle collisions.
Most of the charges are speeding but many
include seatbelt, driving under suspension,
impaired drivers, and other Highway Traffic
Act offenses.
One success includes stopping a fleeing
person who had committed a break and
enter.
The Middlesex OPP also shared their sta-
tistics for the county for the first half of
2005.
The statistics showed Lucan-Biddulph has
decreased by two break and enters from last
year, sitting at 12, theft is also down seven
from last year which was 26.
Drugs were up from 21 in 2004 to 33 this
year and traffic complaints have also
increased along with assaults. Traffic com-
plaints have shot up from 95 in 2004 to 149
this year. Assaults are at 21, two more than
last year.
Beef program gaining momentum
CANADA — With 2,500 producers through-
out Canada having taken the training compo-
nent of The Verified Beef Production
Program, it is gaining momentum.
The producer -led, voluntary program was
introduced in 2003.
Producers are required to take a half day
training workshop.
Some benefits for producers include
improved use of inputs and increased buyer
confidence.
Some new processing plants have indicated
that participation in the program become a
requirement as they develop more niche mar-
kets.
The goal of the program is to build on the
beef industry's excellent food safety record
and continually reinforce consumer confi-
dence.
