Vandals destroy
birdhouses

TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
STEPHEN — Goshen Line resident Wilmer Pfaff isn't
going to let a few vandals discourage him.
Some of Pfaff's hard work was destroyed sometime
over night Oct. 29 when vandals smashed 42 wooden
birdhouses he built and hung on hydro poles on
Babylon Line.
In total, Pfaff has put up 222 birdhouses along
Goshen and Babylon lines between Crediton and
Dashwood roads.
On Oct. 29, Pfaff says one of his neighbours woke up
to a noisy car on Babylon Line that would drive for a
short distance, stop, then drive again. The next day,
the smashed birdhouses were discovered.
Pfaff put up the birdhouses early last summer
because a friend of his did the same thing east of
Crediton and he thought it was a good idea.
The small birdhouses, some of which Pfaff paints, are
made mostly of spruce and pine and are sized for blue-
birds and swallows, which Pfaff says are "cute" and get
rid of a lot of mosquitoes.
Pfaff says he wasn't mad when he heard about the
vandalism, but he was "kind of disgusted ... kids'll be
kids, I guess," he said, adding that mailboxes in the
area have also been vandalized. He says the vandals
probably used a pipe or baseball bat to do the damage.
He decided not to call the police because he didn't
think there was anything they would do about it.
Pfaff says he might be able to salvage some of the
pieces from the destroyed birdhouses to build new
ones. He adds the birds have definitely been using the
houses and some had started to nest.
Neighbours also appreciate Pfaff's birdhouses and he
says they were upset about the vandalism.
Pfaff says he'll put up the new birdhouses as he
builds them.
