Page 21 Wednesday, November 16, 2005 Hensall over Win HENSALL — The Hensall Sherwoods posted a pair of wins on the weekend, rolling over Wingham 6-1 Friday night, before taking a 4-1 win over Milverton in Hensall Saturday night. Friday night in Wingham, the Sherwoods were up 4-0 by the time the first period was just half over and rolled to the 6-1 win. Hensall was paced by a pair of goals from Chris Downie, with Dave Farquhar and Mike Johnson rounding out the scor- ing in the first. Two more goals in the second from Sean McCann and Jeff Finkbeiner were all the Sherwoods needed for the win. Farquhar had three assists to go with his goal with Johnson and Adam McCann each getting two. Singles went to Jarrett Jeffrey, Jeremy VanBergen, Chris Kennedy and Jeff Glover. Saturday night, the Sherwoods fell behind early on a Milverton goal at 18:21 of the first, but roared back with three before the period was over. Glover, Andrew Mayer, and jeff Richardson put the Sherwoods ahead and Van Bergen notched an insurance goal in the second for the 4-1 win. Jeffrey had a pair of assists, with Kennedy, Vanbergen, Scott Richardson and Farquhar also adding assists. (photo/Scott Nixon) Panthers open season with 11-0 win EXETER — The South Huron District High School (SHDHS) girls hockey team opened their season Nov. 10 in Exeter with a pair of games. The Panthers faced CHSS in their first games and pounded them 11-0. Coach Heather Strano said the team played fantastic with all lines clicking and scoring. The Panthers were paced with a pair of goals in the first period from Keri -Ann Reschke and one each from Kristen Ferguson and Ashely Gallagher. The Panthers contin- ued to pour it on in the second with goals from Michelle Weber, Ferguson Kristena Hendrick and two from Jessica Bickell. Bickell added another in the third and Emily Sararas finished off the scoring. Strano said the second game against St. Anne's was tougher competi- tion and the Panthers came out flat. They were behind 2-0 a few minutes into the game and despite work- ing hard to tie the score ended up on the short end of a 6-5 game. The Panthers received goals from Michelle Weber, Ferguson, Reschke, Gallagher and Kelly Cronyn in the loss. Strano said it was a tough loss and hopeful- ly the team will learn to play strong for all three periods. The Panthers next action is Friday with two games in Stratford. The boys' hockey team faced Madill Nov. 11 in Exeter but came out on the short end of a 2-0 score. A pair of goals in the first period was all the visitors needed with the Panthers unable to break through against Madill. Their fresh legs found them scoring early and often as they out hustled a physical St. Mary's team. The game came down to some clutch free throws by Janelle Erb and some good defence by all. Erb led the team with 16 points, Melissa Smith had 12 and Missy Pertschy added 10 plus many assists and rebounds. All the Panther players found the scoring touch and fought hard for the 57-54 win. Saturday morning how- ever was another day and a shorthanded team minus three players was out hustled and outscored by the determined home team, the Parkhill Marauders. This created a three- way tie in the pool that was broken by point spread, dropping the Panthers to last in the pool. The six fatigued Panther players then faced a Dorchester team that outlasted them by three points, ending with a final score of 41-38 The team is to be con- gratulated on their deter- mination and sportsman- ship in some hard fought games with little break. Special mention from coach Phil Conley goes to Roberts and Janine Malcolm for their dedica- tion and leadership of the team and the first year Grade 11 players, Douglas, Erb, Pertschy and Stephanie Deitrich, who are showing great improvement and loyalty as well in their respective positions. South Huron played their last two league games of the season Nov. 7 in Mitchell against Madill and Mitchell. Against Mitchell, it did- n't take the Panthers long to establish a lead they would not relinquish. The team used their fast break and good rebound- ing to put in many second chances baskets and almost doubled their opponents score 49-25. Smith led the team with 16 points and added many assists, while Roberts had 12 points in the win. Pertschy led the team in rebounding with eight. In the Mitchell game, the Panthers came out flat in the early going, but soon found their legs to out hustle the Blue -Devils to their seventh win of the season. Smith once again led the scoring with 17 points, while adding eight rebounds. Kylen VanOsch added eight points and 12 rebounds while seeing limited action Roberts and Janelle Erb added six each.Douglas and Malcolm had five and four respectively in a great all round team effort. This puts South Huron in fourth place in Huron -Perth with seven wins and three losses. They were hosting the quarter finals on Monday.
