Must share the blame
Dear Editor:
While I have never agreed with the Canadian
Government's brand of apartheid concerning the First
Nation People, all Canadians should be angry regard-
ing the conditions that happened at Kashechewan.
There is lots of blame to share beginning with the
Federal Government, who is responsible for the
administration of the First Nations. Andy Scott, the
minister of Indian affairs should be the first one out
the door along with the deputy minister. Why this sit-
uation was ignored for so many years is beyond all
reason.
The government can squirm all they like but Indian
Affairs is a very large ministry and to realize no one is
checking on the matters of the reservations, is not for
lack of personnel.
The Ontario Government also must share the blame
as these people are residents of Ontario.
Finally, where in the world were the Native leaders
to not raise "cain" over this deplorable, disgusting
problem. No doubt the health of many, both young
and old, will linger in many cases for a lifetime.

Breast screening
Dear Editor
This November marks the third anniversary of the
opening of the Ontario Breast Screening Program
(OBSP) at the Alexandra Marine & General Hospital in
Goderich.
This achievement has allowed women in Huron
County to be screened for breast cancer much closer
to home. Since opening three years ago, the OBSP
clinic has increased its hours due to demand and is
also offering evening appointments. Parking is free
and women are treated with the same expert and pro-
fessional care they would receive anywhere in
Ontario.
Breast cancer remains the most common cancer
diagnosed in Huron County women. The cause is still
unknown. Many risk factors have been suggested, but
as yet, none have proven to be as significant as getting
older and being a woman. Eighty per cent of all breast
cancer occurs in women 50 years of age and older.
Research has proven that regular screening mammo-
grams are very effective for this age group.
Mammography is a safe and effective way to diagnose
breast cancer early. Early diagnosis increases your
chance of a full recovery from breast cancer.
Women 50 years of age and older are encouraged to
call 440-0783 or 1-800-461-0640 to book an appoint-
ment for a high quality mammogram and a clinical
breast exam. Within two weeks of your visit, both you
and your doctor will receive a result letter.
If you have never taken advantage of this breast
screening program, now is the time to call. If you
know a woman turning 50, pass this information on to
her. It's that easy, and you'll feel good knowing that
you've taken care of your friends and yourself.
Sincerely, DONNA BUTSON, Nurse Examiner, OBSP
ANNE HALEY, Huron County Health Unit
