(photo/Nina Van Lieshout) Hospital Happenings Put feet first to prevent amputations EXETER —The International Diabetes Federation campaigns with the slogan "put feet first to prevent amputations". Foot complications caused by dia- betes are a major global health problem. Over one million amputations are carried out globally every year. This could be avoided through prevention and improved access to care. It is estimated that 70 per cent of all lower limb amputations are related to diabetes. Foot problems and compli- cations are one of the most costly complications of diabetes and are the most common cause of hospital admissions for people with diabetes. Walking barefoot or inappropriate footwear often contribute to injuries which lead to infection in the foot and potential amputations. Diabetes currently affects more than 194 million people worldwide and is expected to reach 333 mil- lion by 2025. With a relatively low investment, the number of amputations can be significantly reduced. Good diabetes control, well informed self care and professional foot care could reduce the rate of amputations by 85 per cent. Regular foot exams, improved education, appropriate foot wear along with early detection and treatment are key to improving foot problems seen around the world. November is diabetes month with November 14 marking World Diabetes Day. South Huron Hospital Diabetes Education Center is a one -day ministry funded program offered on Wednesdays. Self -referrals can be arranged at 235- 2700 ext 258 or through your family doctor.
