The sale sees Kraft selling the five Canadian plants and a big portion of its Canadian grocery assets, includ- ing Aylmer vegetables and Primo pasta, to two U.S. companies, Sun Capital Partners Inc., and EG Capital Group. The new company, which will include the Exeter can- ning plant, will be called CanGro Foods. • South Huron council opposes a provincial plan to revise the munici- pal employees retirement fund out of fear it could cause increases to property taxes and reduce services. Bill 206, a provincial act which seeks to revise the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), has passed second reading in the Ontario Legislature. • A local doctor recruitment com- mittee is planning to design a web- site to help promote the area to doc- tors. The South Huron Medical Recruitment Committee received a boost as South Huron council agreed to kick in $2,000 for the site, which will provide information on medical opportunities in the area and include links to various other municipal sites. Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC) community liaison officer Charlene Deyarmond confirmed to the Times - Advocate, the residential side of the park will be listed nationally by the end of this week. She said the ORC, which manages land for the province, is seeking one buyer for the entire residential portion, which consists of 355 homes. Deyarmond said current Huron Park residents will not have the option of buying their homes. JANUARY 18 • Dave Burrell is upset the province has decided not to allow Huron Park residents to buy their homes. Burrell, originally from London, has lived in Huron Park for three years. He said his reaction to the news was "disappointment. I was very disappointed and angry. I was angry because I was told we'd be able to buy our places ... I had to actually leave the meeting because I was that angry." JANUARY 25 • Last Monday was a long, highly anticipated night for the candidates running in the 2006 federal election. But for one candidate it was worth the wait to find out he'd still hold his spot in office. Paul Steckle, Liberal incumbent for the riding of Huron -Bruce will add another term to his already mounting 12 -year tender. His victo- ry though, was bitter sweet. • "Pretty close," was how Huron - Bruce Conservative Party candidate Ben Lobb described his narrow election defeat at the hands of incumbent Liberal MP Paul Steckle in the federal election campaign. In his first federal election, Lobb finished with 20,289 votes with Steckle winning a total of 21,178 votes and 39.7 per cent. Lobb had 38.1 per cent. • Conservative Bev Shipley, mayor of Middlesex Centre sailed to victory in his Lambton-Kent-Middlesex rid- ing during Monday night's 2006 election.
