On Nov. 21 the group met in the Board Room of South Huron Hospital. Joanne Bowen intro- duced the guest speaker, Sheila Penne, a certified Diabetic nurse educator. She said that more than two million Canadians have Diabetes and there are three main types: Type 1 Diabetes is usually diagnosed in children or adoles- cents. It occurs when the pan- creas is unable to produce insulin and it is always treated with insulin. Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not pro- duce enough insulin and usually develops in adulthood. It is man- aged through physical activity and meal planning but can require medication and / or insulin. Type 3 Gestational Diabetes is a tempo- rary condition that occurs during pregnancy. After a question and answer period, Elaine Bogart thanked Sheila and presented her with a gift. The business portion of the meeting was conducted by presi- dent Pat Patterson. Final plans were made for the upcoming Christmas party. It was decided that we bring items for the Christmas Bureau. Christmas Celebrations Refreshments were served by the co -hostesses. The Christmas party was held at the Masonic Hall on Dec. 5 with all three chapters present. The refreshments for the social time were prepared by Beat Fheta. The Eastern Star ladies served a delicious turkey dinner. Joanne Bowen, Elsia Hermann, Jay Skillinder, and Elsie Whitteveen of Beta Alpha Master conducted a memory contest about the poem, `Twas the Night Before Christmas.' Favorite Christmas Carols were sung. Several mem- bers were lucky to win the lovely Christmas centerpieces con- tributed by the Mu Epsilon Chapter. Secret pals gifts were exchanged.
