Joint NewYear's service

THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT
THAMES ROAD - Church Service: Jean
Hodgert the organist played several Christmas
tunes on the organ before the Second Sunday
of Advent church service commenced with
Rev. Judith Ritchie lighting the red candle for
peace. Rev. Judith gave words of welcome
and everyone passed the Peace. The Introit
Prepare The Way of
The Lord was sung.
Rev. Judith led in the Call to Worship respon-
sively.
Muriel Parsons lit one candle in the Advent
Wreath and Dorothy Webber lit the other one.
Rev. Judith led in the opening prayer respon-
sively. The opening hymn Come, Thou Long
Expected Jesus was sung. Rev. Judith gave
the announcements and read the Hebrew
reading Malachi 3:1-4.
The Lord's Prayer was
repeated in unison.
Everyone sang the hymn It Only Takes A
Spark. The responsive reading was Luke
1:68-79. The choir sang Every Valley accom-
panied by the pianist Jean Hodgert which was
well done. The Gospel Lesson Luke 3:1-6 was
read by Zachary Kadey and the title of Rev.
Judith's message was "Snail Mail."
The hymn Wait For The Lord was sung and
everyone read the Affirmation of Our Faith "A
New Creed" in unison.
Carolyn Johns and Sharon Passmore
received the offering, and everyone sang Grant
Us, God, The Grace and read the offertory
prayer in unison. Rev. Judith said prayers for
the people. The hymn Hark The Glad Sound
was sung. Rev. Judith gave the
Commissioning and pronounced the benedic-
tion. Everyone sang the choral benediction.
Announcements
Rev. Judith's expected hours: Wed., Dec. 13
- 2 - 5 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 14 - 2 - 5 p.m. (N.B.
The first two hours on Thursdays are "office"
hours.); Fri., Sat. - sermon/service prep, Sun. -
available as needed or call home number.
Sunday School Dates: Dec. 17
Dec. 17 - practice for Christmas Eve. Rev.
Judith would like to hold a `rehearsal' for the
Christmas Eve service on Sun., Dec. 17 after
church. She will try to keep it to 1 hour.
(11:30-12:30 a.m.) followed by refreshments.
Those with particular roles will be contacted.
Christmas Eve
Dec. 24 - Family Christmas Eve Candlelight
Communion Sunday at 7:30 p.m. All God's
children are welcome at this special service
with a tableau of the Christmas story instead
of a meditation. Although we plan to use real
candles with holders at the close of the service,
there will be glow sticks for the children.
The Committee of Local United Churches will
be having a joint service on Sun., Dec. 31 at 11
a.m. in the small gym at South Huron High
School. There will be a New Year cel-
ebration at noon. Praise Band of
Jesus Christ from Acton will be joining
the service.
Personals
The Pym family held their Christmas at the
church on Dec. 2.
The Cann family held their Christmas at the
church on Dec. 9.
Belated congratulations to Jack and Jean
Duncan who celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary at Kirkton Woodham Community
on Sat., Dec. 2. Many people called in the
afternoon.
Get well wishes are extended to Ola Batten
who returned home on Friday afternoon. She
underwent surgery recently in Stratford
Hospital.
Several people from this area attended
"Christmas In the Country" potluck supper and
annual meeting of the Kirkton Horticultural
Society on Tuesday evening.
The guest speaker was Brenda Smith of
Floral Treasures, Mitchell. Her topic was 'sea-
sonal arrangements.' There was a mini
Christmas Flower Show which was very nice.

UCW gives to Christmas Bureau
EXETER - The evening unit of Exeter
United Church held its Christmas meeting
Dec. 4. Unit leader, Marion Kerslake opened
with the poem "The Stableboy's Story," and
26 members answered the roll with a dona-
tion to the Christmas Bureau. A family
Christmas dinner and a light supper will be
catered to in December. A bus trip to the
Geritol Follies in June is being planned.
There will be more information next month.
Devotions were conducted by Bev Campbell,
Barb Wein and Eleanor Clark using "angels"
