President Charles Reid wel- comed everyone. He then introduced pastor Wilbert Schwindt who came to entertain the group. Wilbert is a talented musician. He plays the bot- tles filled with water to vari- ous levels to create the notes. The bottles represent nine black keys and nine white keys. Wilbert started first using spoons but later made a wooden malette to hit the bottles and get the notes he wanted. He also very capably played a violin which he reconstructed from a very bad condition. He also played the mandolin. He had special background equipment for his accompa- niment. A special feature was his last selection when he played his tiny tiny mouth organ which had only eight keys. He had to take care not to swallow it! In case he had a string attached to it! Pastor Wilbert commented on how he enjoys having his grandchildren learn to play with him. After the program the ladies of the Varna U.C.W. served a wonderful turkey dinner which everyone enjoyed. Bill Taylor extended thanks to them on behalf of the group. Several poin- settias and amaryliss bulbs were offered as prizes. Those donating were Mel and Betty Graham, the Reids, the Stephensons, Bill Taylor and the Deicherts. Winners were Mary Ostrom, Margaret Hayter, Wes McBride, Mack Webster, Marlene Diechert, Elmer Hayter, Arnold Keys, Joyce Dowson, Mildred McAsh and Leona McBride. Eleanor McAsh won the lucky x. Everyone enjoyed the event glad to get home VARNA NEWS r Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello As of December 31 last year, all manufacturers of natural health products must have site licences and must meet quality control standards including quality assurance, stability of the product, good sanitary practices at the manufacturing site and a method of recalling faulty products. These are the same rules that drug manufacturers must follow. Consumers are the winners all around. Water is a nutrient and is essential for life. As we age, we tend to drink less water because we eat less with age. We need about 8 cups per day but we don't have to drink that much since much water is obtained from our food. When you are tracking the volume of fluid you consume, consider juices too but not coffee or alcohol because they act as diuretics causing fluid loss. Here's an interesting fad about the anaesthetic, chloroform. In 1853, Dr. John Snow administered it to Queen Victoria of England during the birth of her eighth child. Up to this time, many people thought that it was immoral to give women anaesthesia during childbirth. Current international guidelines for children's exercise suggest one hour per day to reduce the risk of heart disease as adults. A new study is suggesting this be increased to 90 minutes to further reduce risk. Building in good exercise habits as children pays dividends as adults. 7) Huron Apothecary Ltd. 1.r1.s: Phone 235-1982, 440 Main St. Exeter PHARM ASSIST "YOUR HEALTH CARE PHARMACY" and were early.
