Mervyn Erb, a crop consultant with Agri - Solve Inc. touched on several subjects, speak- ing to the full room of farmers about mainly wheat and soybeans. Erb says farmers' expectations and the prognosis of future wheat crops should be "Less, a whole lot less," than previous expec- tations. He went into detail about the importance of the timing of planting a wheat crop, saying that, "A number of long-time, good wheat growers with good memories have told me that wheat planted at the end of October or the first of November usually runs 58-65 bushels/acre (bu/ac). Nov. 11 wheat can be 66 bushels." Erb also says the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) data says the difference between an Oct. 10 planting and a Nov. 8 planting is 17 bu/ac. Ile also says "wheat after Oct. 20 is a poor risk and usually is not profitable. "Agricrop insurance records say wheat planted between Nov. 10-20 will not yield over 60 bu/ac," Erb adds. Erb also says 2/3 to 1 bu/ac a day will be lost if planting after Oct. 5. Planting too late also causes more powdery mildew and leaf problems. He noted some November planted wheat in the fall of 2001 ran 75 bushels due to excel- lent fall and early ideal spring, but added it was still 20 bushels under early planted wheat. Erb gave some suggestions to help ensure wheat crop quantity will be more successful, including using a product, Cruiser, to gain six to 7.4 more bushels or using narrow tracks to gain 3.14 more bushels. Erb also spoke of disease, like Fusarium head blight in spring cereals and an increase of DON, which has received a lot of research attention in the last five years. Touching briefly on barley and oats, he says the varieties are getting better. He also says "soybeans are no longer going to be a prob- lem—free crop," explaining that this year there were "so many problems with blight in beans. Erb also mentioned a trend he's noticed in the past 10 years — buying cheap fertilizer, which he says does not always save money in the end. Borland Farm Service announcement A new company, Huron Perth Ag Service Inc. has been formed by Jeff Borland and Mark Brock. It will offer customers a complete lineup of crop protection products and plant nutrient products. Huron Perth Ag Service Inc. is partnering with Paragon Crop Service Inc., providing growers with professional custom application services. They will continue oper- ating from the same location. NK speakers NK field agronomist Dean Shantz also briefly spoke on several topics, with a main focus on ear moulds in corn. Shantz says although ear mould is not new, having been found in 2005, 2004 and 2003, there have been many localized incidents and regional outbreaks in Southwestern Ontario. Shantz spoke of "Hot Spots," which are areas more likely to form ear mould. A Hot Spot is identified as a place where ear mold has developed "three times in 10 years," says Shantz. Shantz also gave some suggestions for con- trolling "Hot Spots," like harvesting early, growing corn in wider rows and using tillage practices and effective corn rotation. Shantz also spoke of Northern Corn. Leaf Blight, explaining there is "a lot of leaf disease this year." The main one, according to Shantz, is Gibberella Ear Rot which produces toxins. Another disease to look for is Diplodia Ear Mould, which although it does not produce toxins, still a problem for corn farmers. Shantz spoke about corn maturity (when a black layer forms on the corn) and future NK corn products. He says NK is working on several projects this year, like Optimum GAT, nitrogen utiliza- tion and drought tolerance. Pride Seeds speakers Pride Seeds Ontario Market Development and Agronomy representative Doug Alderman and Pride Seeds North Central representative Dan Kerr explained they are looking forward to becoming a "complementary line to NK." Pride Seeds, part of Ag Reliant Genetics, sells several different Hybrids. They say speed is the single most successful factor in the Hybrid business. Pride Seeds grow all their seeds in Canada. Pride Seeds traits include both round -up ready and Bt hybrids. They predict there will be decent pricing within corn during the next four years due to the exploding ethanol demand. Message from the mayor I am proud to have the honour to serve South Huron as your mayor. I am humbled by the democratic process and by the trust that the people of South Huron have placed in me. People of South Huron have voiced their opinion that the com- munication between council and the public is poor. It is not com- mon for a mayor to write in the local paper on a regular basis, so I will write on an irregular basis to try and explain some of the things that are happening in the council chamber and also to explain a few things that are happening at the Huron County council chamber. I believe the positives will outweigh the negatives and I am going to give it a shot. South Huron council meets on the first and third Mondays of each month with a few exceptions such as holidays and summer months. Check our web- site (www. town. southhuron. on. c) for exceptions or you can check with the Times - Advocate or sim- ply call the town office at 519-235- 0310. I encour- age you to come out to see your council in action. If you hear rumours or read something that you have concerns with, please contact your ward rep- resentatives or anyone on council if you would like a response. Political etiquette advises munici- pal politicians not to respond to let- ters of concern in the paper. South Huron council, like most councils in Ontario, does not respond to letters of concern in the paper. All actions by council are recorded in council min- utes and are public infor- mation. These minutes can be viewed on the municipal website or by coming to the town office. My motto was vote for me and work with me. I will be setting up an e-mail address at the town hall in the near future and would like to hear from you with either e- mail, phone, mail, or in person with your ideas and concerns. Ken O ke .B.
