EXETER — If Canada isn't prepared
to stay for one or two generations to
help rebuild Afghanistan, we should
leave now, says photojournalist Richard
Fitoussi of Bayfield.
Fitoussi has visited the country twice
and is working on a documentary on
Canada's mission there.
Fitoussi, a graduate of Central Huron
Secondary School and a Ryerson pho-
tography graduate student was speak-
ing to students at South Huron District
Secondary School Dec. 7.
He is back in Canada for a few weeks
from Cambodia where he is the CEO
and founder of the Cambodian Land
Mine Museum Relief Fund (CLMMRF).
Fitoussi has been involved with land
mine clearance, victim relief, interna-
tional awareness and numerous
fundraising programs since establish-
ing the CLMMRF in 2001.
After visiting Afghanistan in 2004,
Fitoussi said he was in Cambodia last
spring when he was called by a film
producer who was concerned about
media coverage of Afghanistan. Fitoussi
was asked if he wanted to go back to
Afghanistan to make a film documen-
tary.
Although Fitoussi said he was a pho-
tographer and not a film maker, he was
told the equipment and instructions
would be waiting for him in
Afghanistan.
Fitoussi said the situation has
changed from 2004 - when he was in
Kabul with the ISAF force - and that
there should be a debate in Canada
about the mission and whether we are
there for the right reasons.
Although Kabul was dangerous, it
was stable Fitoussi said but Kandahar,
where Canada is operating now, "is
really dangerous."
Fitoussi found out first hand how dan-

Steckler Dion
has integrity
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
OTTAWA — "He was my first choice and my only
choice. As it turned out...(he) became the only choice of
a majority of the delegates choice in the end," says
Huron -Perth MP Paul Steckle about new Federal Liberal
leader Stephane Dion, who was elected as leader at the
party's convention in Montreal Dec. 3.
Steckle endorsed Dion for party leader in August and
says what drew him to Dion were a number of traits.
"His honesty, his integrity and a man of
character...(he's) an individual who can stand on his
own, who is decisive and knows where to go. He has a
plan of action, he has an agenda, he's made that clear.
His record in the house is impeccable in terms of what
he's done."
Steckle said he has known Dion since 1996 when the
question of separation was being raised and says Dion
was one of the saviours of Quebec staying in Canada.
"Then he wrote the Clarity bill, which is the one that
now stands between separation and the rest of us."
Most of the delegates had Dion as their second choice,
said Steckle, which made him a likely candidate to win.
"I felt from the beginning if he were in third place in, it
was higher than they expected, he had momentum and
on the third ballet surged ahead of everybody. The
fourth ballet was a fait accompli."
Steckle said despite Dion's involment in past Liberal
governments, "the issue is long gone.
"It's time to move on...this government has an agenda
that they want to put forward. If they want to do this in
minority, what would they do in majority. We would
