Wednesday, December 6, 2006 TIMES -ADVOCATE 17 Christmas candlelight cantata service Dec. 17 By Joan Beierling VARNA CORRESPONDENT VARNA — The top shufflers at the Varna Complex on Nov. 29 were Ruth Johnston 197, Arnold Keys 191, Wes McBride 170 and Eleanor McAsh 163. The Varna Crokinole Club met last Tuesday night in the Varna Church. Members drew cards for partners and played doubles. Gerald Dearing and Joan Beierling were first with 31pts.; Second was Joe Fulop and Murray Purdue 28; Third Abe Leitch and Marg Hayter 27; Fourth were Dave Whyte and Charles Reid 26 pts. The club will meet for singles play on Dec. 12 for the last time until the New Year. Deb Rathwell welcomed 38 ladies of the Varna UCW, former members and Varna Community friends to the Varna Complex for a delicious Christmas Dinner catered by Sandra Turner. BoNnie Roy supplied all the fresh flower arrangements for the table. Committee in charge were Elly Van Bergen, Bonnie Roy , Barb Consitt, Joyce Dowson, Sharon Chuter and Deb Rathwell. Christmas cards were sent around to be signed for Helen Taylor, Elaine Stephenson, Ilene and Hazel Dowson. Pastor Elly Van Bergen gave the blessing for the din- ner and Sandra was thanked for catering especially being that day Nov. 30 was her and Davids 38th Wedding Anniversary. Anniversary wishes were extend- ed to Sandra and Dave. Pastor Elly then introduced the Ste Onge family for their entertainment. Cheryl Ann is the organist/choir director at St. James in Seaforth. She introduced her daughters Mary Paige and Ireland as well as her son Griffin Eight year old Mary Paige sang, step danced and also played a duet on piano with Mom, Cheryl Ann, while six year old Ireland stepdanced and also sang. Five year old Griffin sang Jolly Old St. Nicholas. Cheryl Ann sang Breath Of Heaven and played piano as well. This very musical inclined Cheryl Ann also sang Silent Night and played a medly of Christmas Carols. Cheryl Ann ended their evening with singing and playing Tis the Season Come Around Again. Bonnie Roy thanked the family for their wonderful entertainment and pre- sented them with a gift. Joyce Dowson presented Pastor Elly Van Bergen with a gift as well as Shirley Hill. Carol Simons presented our leader Deb Rathwell with a gift that was much deserved for all her hard work organizing and keeping the UCW on track. The committee also presented a skit entitled "Eddie and Elk." Deb Rathwell portrayed Eddie the Elk, Pastor Elly was the narrator, Sharon Chuter was a reindeer, Barb Consitt was Mother of Eddie, Bonnie Roy was Ray Santa - the jolly old elf There must have been many excited children in and around Exeter last Saturday when the "fat, jolly old elf," Santa Claus, himself, "Ho! Ho! Hoed!" his way along the parade route, and later listened to their Christmas wishes. He is certainly a very different character from the original Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, (as well as bankers, pawnbrokers, maidens, mariners and scholars and thieves!) and the person first associated with gift giv- ing at Christmas. Nicholas lived during the fourth century, in Asia Minor, and devoted himself to helping the poor. He became a bishop while he was very young, and many miracles were attributed to him; providing dowries for three sisters, calming great storms at sea, and feeding people during a famine. By 1100, Saint Nicholas had become a symbol of gift giving. Throughout most of Europe it was done on Dec. 6, Saint Nicholas day. During the 17th century, Dec. 25 became the more popular gift giving day. When the Dutch settled in "Nieuw Amsterdam," now New York, in 1630, they brought the Saint Nicholas tradi- tion with them. As settlers of other nationalities moved in they adopted the stories of Sinterklass, the dutch name for Saint Nicholas, the origin of the name Santa Claus, as their own. Saint Nicholas had originally been portrayed as a tall thin man wearing bishops' robes, riding a white horse. He was later seen as a tubby man in a broad brimmed hat wearing short breeches, carrying a long stemmed pipe. An American author, Washington Irving saw him as riding over the tree -tops in a wagon loaded with gifts for the chil- dren's stockings. Clement Moore continued the transformation in 1823 when he published his popular poem An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas. In this poem, on the night before Christmas, St. Nick was "dressed all in red from his head to his foot," had twinkling eyes, and "a round little belly." He travelled over the house tops in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. Thomas Nast, a well known cartoonist complet- ed the transformation of Santa Claus about 1863, when he pictured him in Harper's Illustrated Weekly Magazine in a red suit trimmed with fur. Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Pere Noel, Weihnachtsmann ...no matter what we call him the sto- ries and legends of Santa Claus add a special dimension to the excitement and wonder of Christmas time. "Welcome to Exeter, Santa!" the Elf and Joyce Dowson was Santa Clause. All ladies were wished a very Merry Christmas Congratulations to Mavis and Barry Govier on the birth of their new daughter and also to brother Jacob on the arrival of his new sister. Congrats also to grand par- ents David and Sandra Turner. The First Sunday of Advent Candle the candle of Hope was lit by Charles and Bernice Reid as well as son Doug and grandson Blake. Birthday wishes were extended to Eleanor McAsh. Pastor Elly welcomed everyone and gave the announcements. Elly announced the Advent Event was still being held from 2-4 in the afternoon for those that missed it on Saturday evening. She thanked those that loaned some of their treasures she needed to put her display together with woodsy decorations and woodland Santas. Free will offerings will go to the missions and service fund. Worship Service will be in Varna Sun., Dec. 10 the sec- ond Sunday of Advent. On Dec. 17 there will be a Christmas Candle light Cantata Service "The Wondrous Story" in Bayfield at 7:30 p.m. This is presented by the Choirs of St. Andrews United Church, Trinity and St. James Anglican plus community singers including Linda Linfield, Willi Laurie and Deb Rathwell. On Dec. 24 at 10:30 a.m. the Christmas Eve Service will be in Goshen. TOYOTA PURCHASE 319 % APR; FOR 36 MONTHS 2007 Corolla CE ` FOR $249*@4.9% PER MONTH FOR 48 MONTHS WITH 81,472 DOWN.
