TREVOR TRUEMNER Hensel!, ON Home:(519) 262-2984 Cell: (519) 671-611/ 14 TIMES—ADVOCATE Wednesday, December 6, 2006 Remember that Santa needs a safety clause TORONTO - This Christmas, don't just think Santa Claus, think Safety Clause too. That's right, make safety the law of your household this sea- son. The only man in red you want arriving at your home is Santa, not a mem- ber of the local fire depart- ment. To reduce the risks of electrical fires, check all your Christmas lights, but your bulbs shouldn't exceed the maximum allowable wattage or volt- age. To be safe, unplug them before going to bed or heading out. And don't use damaged strings of lights. If a bulb burns out, replace it quickly. It's not just a matter of looking pretty -- if one bulb is out, the others may burn at a higher than normal tem- perature. While you're at it, check for insulation - plastic or other non-metal- lic material - between the lamp and metal of the bulb reflector. Outdoor decor When decorating out- doors, use only light strings made to withstand the weather. Don't fasten them with metal nails or tacks - use insulated sta- ples or tape. To keep con- nections watertight, cover them with plastic electrical tape. Run your outdoor cords suspended above the ground, keeping them out of puddles and snow. Running lights along an eavestrough, or on a metallic tree for that mat- ter, could be asking for trouble. Speaking of the Christmas tree, keep it level and away from any exits, fireplaces, heaters and other heat sources. You might also want to make the area around the tree a no smoking zone. If you go the natural route, make sure the tree you choose is freshly cut. Bend the twigs and nee- dles - if they're springy, they're fresh. Regular watering should keep it green and prevent a fire hazard. Remember to stay with lit candles and blow can- dles out before leaving a room. What about the toys under the tree? Children should only get toys appro- priate to their ages. In fact, most toy related cooking with memories BY DEBBY WAGLER Creamy Chicken or Turkey Some of those old recipes that you had when growing up just stay in your memory as special meals! We often had left over turkey or chicken done up in a white sauce with mushrooms and onions and celery. They were served over awesome puffy pastry tarts or fresh biscuits. You may have some left overs in the weeks ahead that you can try this recipe out! Make it as cheesy and creamy as you like! I/4 cup butter 1 cup finely chopped celery 1 medium onion chopped 1/2 Ib mushrooms scrubbed and sliced I/4 cup flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 2 cup milk 2 cup shredded old cheddar 2 cup packed cut cup cooked turkey or chicken Melt the butter and saute the celery, onion and mushrooms till limp. Sprinkle with the flour and seasonings. Stir in milk and cook till thickening. Stir in cheese and meat. Heat through. Serve over tender biscuits or puff pastry. What a delicacy! Toys and packaging Two quick points about Christmas morning. In the excitement of trying out every toy don't forget to read the instructions. Read them carefully to make sure your kids understand the proper use of each toy. Number two, after all the gifts have been opened, toss the packaging in the trash - even better recycle it! For younger children especially, plastic bags can be dangerous. Packaging can pose a risk for adult "toys" too. If you get a new TV, CD play- er or other such valuable, the empty boxes at the curb let any thief know you have something worth stealing. Don't encourage break-ins - make sure this packaging is disposed of `anonymously.' Don't forget to shovel and salt your sidewalks and steps around your home. Keep your vehicle topped up with oil, fuel and wind- shield washer fluid. Pack a winter emergency care package (blankets, flash- light, candle and match- es,water, candybars etc.) in your car in case of unexpected circumstances. Let's have a happy and safe Christmas! Beyond the entry, up a step and under a covered porch, is a compact foyer, with a handy coat cupboard near the U-shaped stairway. To the left of the foyer is a den, which could easily double as a guest room, thanks to a closet with sliding doors. The formal dining room, to the right of the foyer, boasts a built-in buffet as well as partly mullioned windows that overlook a small porch. The kitchen, conveniently located between the dining room and great room, is designed for efficiency as well as comfort, with a U-shaped counter configuration, a pantry and a raised eating bar. The great room extends into the back garden, breaking out of the box. With a fireplace for warmth during the cooler months, and french doors that open onto a covered terrace to make serving alfresco meals a breeze, this will be a room for all seasons. Opposite the kitchen, the laundry room enjoys access to the back garden via a covered entry, and also contains a coat cupboard, perfect for in- and off-season gear. Adjacent is a lavatory with a shower stall, as well as a storage area and broom closet. Upstairs, the spacious master suite overlooks the back garden for peace and privacy. It features a generous walk-in closet and an en suite with double basins and a shower stall. The soaker tub adds a touch of spa -like luxury. The second and third bedrooms are separated by closets, reducing noise transmission, and share a three- piece bathroom. Bedroom No. 3 features a bay window. Nearby is the linen closet. Exterior finishes include vertical board -and -batten siding in the gables, with horizontal wood siding below. Painted wooden pilasters are set on cut -stone bases, and a window -box is tucked beneath the den window. White -painted trim completes the picture. This home features nine -foot ceilings throughout, and measures 30 feet wide and 59 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 2,275 square feet. An unfinished basement is included with the plans.
