Claus parade By Carmel Sweeney ZURICH CORRESPONDENT ZURICH - The lighted Santa Claus parade in Zurich Sunday night was another big success, with a lot of nice- ly decorated floats for the occasion. There were lots of spectators along the route to watch as the parade went by with several kids ending up at the complex to see Santa and get their treats. Once again Vicki Wilder and all her helpers did a great job of arranging everything as well as M.C.'s Don Beauchamp and his Elves! On Sunday night Dec. 10 there will be a "Live Nativity Scene", beginning at 7 p.m. at the Zurich park pavilion. This event is being sponsored by all the Zurich church- es. Be sure to dress warm! Everyone is invited to attend. There will be a Christmas appreciation get-together for all the ministers of our three clustered parishes to be held this Sunday afternoon - Dec. 10 from 2 - 4 p.m. at St. Peter's parish hall at St. Joseph. The family of Gordie and Cecilia Smith held their pre - Christmas dinner and get-together last Saturday with their children coming from various places. Joe and Martha Risi spent the past 16 days recently in Hawaii on a trip with Youman Tour group. While away they enjoyed going to many beautiful places and sight seeing tours. The weather was excellent the whole time and they came back with nice tans. The family of Jean Geoffrey children and their spous- es, grand and great -grand children held their Christmas get-together and party on Sun., Dec. 3 with supper at Erb's, with 42 attending followed by seeing the Santa Claus parade and finishing the evening at the hall again. There's going to be a Charles Dicken's Christmas Carol reading in Exeter at James Street United Church on Sun., Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door, and are now available at the church office, Scotia Bank or Village Vines Flower Shops in Exeter. Betty Oke along with son Wayne and daughter Katie from Exeter recently spent the weekend in Toronto with her niece; Bonnie and Guido Panacci as Katie took part in a National Swimming Competition in Toronto. Peter Pan is fantastic! Be sure to go and see the musical, "Peter Pan" in Goderich at the high School which is really good. Heather and I were among the audience on opening night and we really enjoyed the live play that had a full house. Lisa Miller of R. R. #2 Zurich played Peter Pan and was just perfect for the part. Her singing was great! She is the daughter of Mike and Dianne Miller. The play is still on this Thurs., Dec. 7 - Sun., Dec. 10. Call the Livery for tickets at 519-524-6262 as soon as possible before all the seats are full - it sure is fantastic!! The Municipality of Blue -Water held their staff Christmas party and dinner along with their spouses in Varna on Sat., Dec. 2. The hall was nicely decorated and a delicious meal was catered by the Bayfield Optimist Club. Hensall District Co -Op Christmas Staff party and sup- per was held at the complex in Zurich last Saturday which was catered by Jerry Rader/staff. Happy Retirement! May we wish Ross Fisher a happy retirement after working with the village office for many years. Bob and Pastor Ann Krueger recently spent a week in Georgia with their son Robert. The Bluewater Rest Home held their staff Christmas party/dinner and get-together recently at Hessenland. Anyone wanting to go skating at the Zurich Arena with their little ones or alone can do so on Tuesdays from 10 - 11:30 a.m. or again on Thursdays from 1 - 2:30 p.m. every week. It's good exercise, and no crowd of people to worry about while you are skating. Tickets for the New Year's Eve Dance in Zurich are now available at Tasty -Nu Bake Shop, Erb's Country Kitchen or the Zurich Variety Store plus any Bean Festival Committee Members at $25 per person. Join the party for Zurich's 150th last blast Sun., Dec. 31 from 8 p.m. - 2 a.m. Band is the New Boys. Diners Aimee Rau along with some of the school children's choir at St. Boniface and Mrs. Earle went to the diners last Wed. at the Zurich Complex where they sang some Christmas carols. Anyone wanting to join the diners for their Christmas meal on Wed., Dec. 20 at 12 p.m. are to phone Kay Hayt at 519-236-4632 before Fri., Dec. 15 so they can pre- pare enough food. Birthdays Happy Belated Birthday wishes go out to Kacey Rothenberg turning 13 on Nov. 29, Sandy Stephan on Dec. 5, and twins; Keith and Ken Gingerich on Dec. 5. A special Happy `93rd' Birthday to Nora Corriveau of the apt. at the rest home on Dec. 6. The staff Christmas dinner for Blessing Community Store and their spouses was held at Erb's Country Kitchen on Nov. 29 with another delicious meal pre- pared by Mike and his helpers served country style. Grade 3/4 students at St. Boniface School went by bus to the Lambton Museum on Dec. 6. The youth group are going to see the residents at the rest -home on Dec. 7. No school Fri., Dec. 8 as there are parent interviews for report cards. There will be an "Angels in Advent Celebration" at the church on Tues., Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. with the grade 8 class having a bake sale afterwards. A matinee performance will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the church for anyone wanting to go. Christmas break holi- days are from Dec. 23 to Mon., Jan. 8. Barb and John Reber of Missisauga have recently moved to Dashwood. They are the parents of Kim Ryckman. English schoolboys had always been encour- aged to carefully write "Christmas Pieces" home to their parents at the end of first term to show how their hand- writing had improved, and hopefully ensure an extra Christmas present or two! These letters were written on special sheets of paper with coloured borders and head- ings. The actual date of the sending of the first Christmas cards is uncertain, but it was definitely during the early 1840's. Henry Cole, who had a card designed in 1843 to send to 1,000 of his freinds, certainly caused the most uproar with hi lithograph of three generations of a family cele- brating Christmas by drinking wine together. President is Bridget Groot. Scouts and Beavers The Scouts and their leaders spent from Nov. 24 - 26 at a winter camp in Auburn with lots of elk and out door activities. They took part in the Christmas parade on Sunday with the Beavers and collected can -goods as well for our local food bank. The Scouts hold their meetings every Monday night at St. Boniface School. The Zurich Beavers hold their meetings at the Lutheran Church on Monday nights. On Dec. 18 they will have a mystery gift exchange and Christmas party. No meeting again until Jan. 8.
