SH REC CENTRE EXETER — The new South Huron council started its work Monday night with the swearing in of Mayor Ken Oke, Deputy Mayor George Robertson and councillors Jim Dietrich, David Frayne, Cathy Seip and Tom Tomes. Following the swearing in ceremony, Oke gave his inaugural speech, saying he is proud to have the honour of serving South Huron as Mayor. Oke said the council has a lot of hard work and tough decisions ahead of it, with issues such as finishing the flood control project on the east side of Exeter as well as sewers in Crediton and Centralia. Other projects mentioned by Oke included the Lake Huron water pipeline that will be starting in the summer as well as working on a new community centre in Crediton in the near future. Oke added that raising taxes was an easy solution to problems and challenged the council to come up with new ideas to address issues. Following the address, a recommendation was brought to council proposing that the times for council meetings be changed to a start time of 5:30 p.m. The recommendation would see staff reports to the council start at 5:30 p.m. with delegations starting at 7 p.m. Chief administrative officer Larry Brown told council the earlier start time will allow fewer meetings to extend past 10 p.m. Coun. Dietrich said of the motion that if the meetings were going to start at 5 p.m., they may as well start at 1 p.m. Coun.Frayne replied that if the meetings were to start at 1 p.m., he would lose a day's pay in order to attend. Robertson said the changed start time had been looked at in order to make days shorter for municipal staff. Dietrich asked if the new time could be tried for the winter and looked at again in the spring. The motion was then passed to change meetings to the 5:30 p.m. start time effective Dec. 18. ha c Oman un lea Glans www.huy.net HIGH SPEED INTERNET SERVING EXETER & SURROUNDING AREAS For as low as $19.95/mo. 519-236-4333 Christmas lighting — Christmas came to Hensall Dec. 1 with the lighting of the village ChristmasTree, with Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson and Hensall councillor KayWise lighting up the tree.
