Panthers Girls at WOSSAA basketball EXETER — The South Huron District High School Junior Girls basketball team lost their semi-final WOSSAA game 44- 23 to an excellent team from Tillsonburg Nov. 23 in Stratford, said coach Terry O'Rourke. Kacie Erb led with six points while Chrystal Willert had five points and Julia Roberts scored four. In the bronze medal game, the Panthers lost 25-22 to Stratford Central for the third time this season. Roberts had 13 points and Mairead O'Rourke had four. Marlee Baehnisch also played well, said O'Rourke, who added it was an excellent effort on the day by all the players and they should be proud of their sea- son, finishing with an overall record of 22-7. The Senior Girls also were at WOSSAA in Stratford. The team played determined and spirited basketball, said coach Phil Conley, but were outmatched in the first game by East Elgin and in the second game were outlasted by Stratford Northwestern. The Panthers, who were led by Melissa Smith at point guard with 26 points on the day, had some great moments but could- n't match the skill of their opponents on the day, said Conley. Janelle Erb and Maggie Roberts both displayed great heart and leadership, he added. The leading rebounder on the day was Missy Pertschy and the team also received good rebounding from Chantal Yearley. Conley thanks Megan Brintnell for helping to manage the team and Kendra Windsor for scoring at home games and tournaments. Conley also thanks the gradu- ating students who have played their fmal basketball game at SHDHS, including leading scor- er Smith as well as Roberts, who is the team's only fifth year player and had many personal bests this season. Other graduates include Stephanie Dietrich, one of the team's leading three-point shooters and rebounder as well as Sierra Douglas who Conley said is another good three-point shooter and guard. Also graduating are Yearley, who Conley said is a much improved post player and guard and also Justine VanEsbroeck and Kelly Glover, two of the team's other seniors who have played only one year. The senior team will be rep- resented at the annual allstar game hi Goderich this year by Erb and Smith. Coaches Conley and Mandy Migchels thank the players for a great season of competition and fun on and off the court. The coaches said the players represented SHDHS well in all respects of their conduct and sportsmanship and congratula- tions on a successful season. Jets stay in first LUCAN — The Lucan-Ilderton Jets remain in first place in the league after two more wins last week, which improved their record to 9-1-1 and 19 points, one ahead of Clinton. Despite being in first place, Jets general manager Rob Andrews said with the parity in the league, the standings will be tight the whole season. The Jets were in Monkton Nov. 24 and fired seven power play goals on the way to a 7-3 win. The Jets were up 3-0 after the first period on goals from Matt MacFarlane, Jason Davies and Mark Landon. Lucan-Ilderton extended their lead to 6-2 in the second with Shawn Fairweather, Mark Phillips, and Todd Hunt scoring before Jason Wilson put the game away in the third. Facing Wingham Nov. 25 in Ilderton, Andrews said the team was sluggish to start the game with the Bulls taking a 1-0 lead in the first. But in the second period, the Jets came awake to score five goals in seven minutes from Davies, Darrell Parsons, JD MacFarlane, Tim Parsons and Mark Phillips Andrews said it was a chippy game with several fights and the Jets lost several players who will be unavailable when they visit the Royals tonight (Wednesday) at 8:45 p.m. MacFarlane finished the scoring in the third with his second of the game on a penalty shot for a 6-3 win. Andrews noted one of the strengths of the Jets this season is balanced scoring and that despite having only two scorers in the top 30 in the league, the Jets are in the top five overall for goals scored. "We have four lines that can score," said Andrews. "Our coach- ing has never been afraid to use the fourth line. They know their role as a defensive line but yet they can still score." Thedford will be in Lucan Dec. 2 at 8:30 p.m. Solo Scores For the week of Nov. 22 - High score - Jim Bell, 2nd high score - Teresa McCann, Lucille Masse, High solo - Shorty Caldwell, 2nd high solo - Sandy Maxwell, Mystery score - Gladys Bierling HENSALL SHERWOODS SENIOR 'A' HOCKEY HENSALL vs MONKTON WILDCATS SAT., DEC. 2 -7:30 P.M. - HENSALL ARENA HENSALL vs TAVISTOCK SUN., DEC. 3 -4 P.M. - ZURICH ARENA
