The Times Advocate, 2006-11-29, Page 14ES Crossroads 14 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday, November 29, 2006 Exeter Skating Club continues to grow EXETER — Members of the Exeter Skating Club have had excellent results so far this year, with skaters at all levels bring- ing home medals from several different events. The club has several different programs starting with the Canskate "learn to skate" and "Pre -Power" levels as well as the Starskate "Learn to Skate " and competitive skating. There is also Learn to Skate synchronized skating and Adult Masters synchronized skating. Anyone wishing to join the club can still register by contact- ing Deb Oke at 235-2079 or Kathy McLlwain at 235-4751. Program Assistants are needed as well as the club relies on its junior and senior skaters to assist in the development of younger skaters. To arrange for a training day, contact one of the club members. The ESC has tripled its num- bers of Canskaters this year with over 65, as well as 18 Junior skaters, 21 seniors and 40 syn- chronized skaters. The club has also had over 77 badges and stages passed by the Canskaters this year and coach McElwain said the club is off to a positive start thanks to a dedi- cated and committed executive. Other coaches for the club include freelance coaches Patty Dougherty, Jen Overholt and Jeff Loosley as well as synchro- nized coach Melissa Hendrick and Canskate coach Michelle Roy. Skaters from the club have been at several competitions so far this year including the Summer Sizzle in August in Burlington; the St. Thomas Fall Skate in September; the Isabelle Henderson Memorial Competition in Sarnia from Oct. 20-22 and the Charles Dover Memorial Competition in Lucknow Nov.4. The club also competed in the Mooretown John McKay Memorial Invitational this week- end and will be at several other competitions this year, including Fort Erie in January, Stratford in February as well as the Future Stars even in Cambridge in March. Some of the results of the com- petitions are as follows: Summer Sizzle • Sarah Kwajafa-Preliminary B -fourth; • Amanda Kelland-Preliminary B -third; • Mackenzie Holtzmann- PreNovice ladies Long -14th; • Abbey Oke -Pre -Novice ladies Long -15th; • Kyla Hunt Beach -Preliminary B- fourth; • Justine Sheppard -Gold Starskate-fifth; • Sarah Walker Hill -Gold Starskate-seventh. "I do my best to give each skater the opportunity to achieve their personal best while enjoying the fun, social and positive environment. Skating is a discipline sport and an excellent way for my students to gain self confidence, sports- manship and many other life learning qualities," said McElwain.
