Clean Water Act passed, ABCA pleased
ONTARIO — Conservation Ontario and the
Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley Source
Water Protection Project applaud the pas-
sage of Bill 43, the Clean Water Act, by the
Ontario legislature and look forward to its
imminent proclamation into law.
"The Clean Water Act is essential to pro-
tecting Ontario's drinking water sources,"
says chairman of Conservation Canada Dick
Hibma.
"With the Act in place, conservation author-
ities, municipalities, landowners and other
stakeholders will work together to ensure
municipal sources of drinking water are
properly protected," Hibma adds.
Since the tragedy at Walkerton in May
2000, Conservation Ontario and its member
authorities have worked with the province
and other stakeholders, including municipali-
ties, the farming community, industry and
property owners, to provide expertise in
developing the best approach to source water
protection.
Source water protection builds on past sci-
ence and studies and links directly to the
water management programs, conservation
authorities and their partner municipalities
have been doing for years.
"There are strong economic, public health
and environmental benefits to ensuring clean
and plentiful sources of drinking water," says
Hibma.
"Our member authorities are eager to get
to work under this important new Act,"
Hibma adds.
Locally, the Ausable Bayfield and Maitland
Valley Conservation Authorities have formed
a Source Water Protection partnership.
"Our project has been working hard for
some time to build technical capacity and
create public awareness," says Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) pro-
ject manager Cathie Brown.
"With the passage of the Clean Water Act
we are now able to move toward the develop-
ment of local, science -based plans to protect
drinking water," says Brown.
Conservation Ontario represents Ontario's
36 conservation authorities, local, communi-
ty-based environmental organizations that
manage natural resources with a particular
emphasis on water.

EXETER — Few people get a
chance to see the inner workings of
the United Nations, but one student
from the Huron -Perth area will be
getting an all -expenses paid visit to
the seat of international diplomacy
this year thanks to the Odd Fellow
and Rebekah Lodges in Huron and
Perth.
The local branch of the charitable
organization is seeking students in
the 15-17 year-old age range willing
to compete for the tour by entering
an essay contest.
Students are being asked to sub-
mit a 500 word essay on why they
want to visit the UN.
The essays will be judged early in
2007 by a panel of judges and the
winner will be slated for a multi -day
visit to New York during the early
part of July with a bus load of other
winners from Canada and the
United States.
Students interested in competing
for the local spot can contact South
Huron District High School or local
co-ordinators Bob and Helen
Coates.
For the last 55 years the Odd
Fellows and Rebekahs have been
sending students on the educational
tour of the UN.
The trip includes highlights of
New York as well as tours of
Washington and Gettysburg.
Each year a student from Huron
and Perth counties is selected by the
local lodges.
The United Nations Pilgrimage
was started in 1950 with the first
group of 11 students.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs
are the only group permitted to
gather at the UN and go behind the
scenes for briefmgs and tours.
