(photo/Scott Nixon) South Huron council veterans say their goodbyes to politics By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF SOUTH HURON — Three veteran members of South Huron council said goodbye to municipal politics Monday night at the outgoing council's final regular meeting. Mayor Rob Morley and Coun. Harvey Ratz decided to retire from municipal politics, while Deputy Mayor Dave Urlin ran for mayor in Northern Bruce Peninsula, but was defeated by longtime incumbent Milton McIver. Morley leaves South Huron after 18 years in municipal politics, including six years as South Huron's first mayor and 12 years on the former Usborne Township council, including three years as Usborne's last reeve before amalgamation. He is also the current Huron County warden, a role he will hold until Dec. 7. Morley thanked the people of South Huron and the former Usborne Township and was quick to give credit to municipal staffers for their work. He noted South Huron council has had a number of major decisions to deal with, starting soon after amalgamation with the situation surround- ing the Exeter Library, the construction of which was stalled when the original contractor went into receivership. "We didn't sit back and watch," Morley said of council over the last six years. "We set the pace and it's been to the benefit of the people." Morley, who sold his trucking business last spring, said he has taken another job with a Huron County company but was unsure Monday night of his starting date. "I think it's been a great ride," he said. Urlin has spent 18 years in municipal politics, including the last six as South Huron deputy mayor. Before amalgamation he was on the for- mer Exeter council for 12 years, six as a deputy reeve and six as a councillor. Urlin also served as Huron County warden in 2002-03. Urlin said it will be tough trying to find some- thing to do for the 20-30 hours a week he spends on council work, but added he intends to fish and play golf. Urlin thanked council and staff, joking it will be nice for him to walk in a grocery store and be out in 10 minutes rather than an hour and a half, a result of listening to the concerns of residents. But he said he'll miss the work and he wishes the new council well. Ratz is ending a 15 -year career on council, the last six as the representative for the Stephen ward on South Huron council. He also spent nine years on the former Stephen council, including three years as reeve before amalgamation in 2000. Ratz gave thanks for "15 years of putting up with me and 15 years of me putting up with See COUNCIL page 2 Santa.
