(photos/Nina Van Lieshout) Sunoco station wasn't "economically viable" EXETER — A spokesper- son with Suncor Energy Products said last week dos- ing the Exeter Sunoco station recently was "a difficult deci- sion." Senior communications advisor Melanie Vendrame said the station, which was re -branded Sunoco in the early 1990s, was closed because keeping it open was- n't economically viable. "In these situations," Vendrame wrote in an e-mail interview, "we need to make the best decision for Suncor and our stakeholders. Unfortunately, at this particu- lar site in Exeter, this meant shutting down operations." The topic of the closure was discussed at South Huron council's Oct. 23 meeting when Grand Bend resident Norm Tufts expressed his concerns, explaining that he and other residents of the 'Bend used to drive to Exeter to buy high octane `Ultra 94' gas at the Sunoco station. While in Exeter, they would also shop in town. With the station now closed, Tufts said those Grand Bend residents won't be corning to Exeter. Officer charged LUCAN BIDDULPH — Huron OPP Const. Jeff Walraven, 41, has been charged with careless driving, according to the Huron OPP after an Oct. 24 collision on Main Street at the north end of Lucan. Three vehicles were involved in the collision. A Ford Taurus was southbound on Richmond Street entering the construction zone in Lucan. A VW Jetta was following the Taurus. As the roadway changed from pavement to gravel due to construction, both cars slowed down. An OPP van was also southbound. The OPP vehicle then collided with the Jetta which collided with the rear of the Taurus. Walraven was released from hos- pital and is recovering at home. Funding to shorten ER wait times CLINTON — The McGuinty government has committed more than $142 million in new resources in Ontario through a three-point Emergency Department Action Plan, Huron - Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell announced recently. "Our plan will help ensure emergency rooms stay open and will allow them to respond effectively and efficiently to local patient needs," said Mitchell. "Our investment will strengthen our health care system from com- munity-based care to our local hospital(s)." Under the funding, South Huron Hospital will receive $139,700, including $31,600 to reduce emergency room waiting times. Low turnout at advanced poll LUCAN BIDDULPH — The first advanced election poll last Saturday at the Lucan Biddulph Township was, "a complete waste of money," according to Lucan Biddulph clerk Ron Reymer. Only seven people attended the advanced poll throughout the eight-hour day to vote for the Ward 3 Granton and area councillor posi- tion. Granton resident and current Ward 3 Coun. Doug Anderson is running against Granton resident Alex Westman. All other positions have been acclaimed. Council spoke of the possibility that some residents might be confused since cards reminding residents to vote were not sent out.But this is nothing new, according to coun- cil members. Reymer says the municipality has never sent out cards and this is the third time an election has occurred since amalgamation. The next advanced poll is today (Wednesday) between 12 and 8 p.m at the Lucan Biddulph Township Office. Monday is election day when voters eligible to vote can attend polls at either the Lucan Memorial Community Centre or the Granton Fire Hall between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Pre-trial for Ducharme case EXETER — South Huron mayoral candidate Dean Ducharme pleaded not guilty to charges of alleged Building Code violations in Goderich court last week. As reported in last week's Times -Advocate, the case involves charges by the municipality against Ducharme and his company Huron Contractors about alleged Building Code violations on construction of a home at 369 Pryde Boulevard. (No appointment necessary) Tufts has sent petitions into the company about the sta- tion's closure. Council also sent the com- pany a letter of concern. "Closing a Sunoco gas sta- tion is not something that we take lightly," Vendrame said. "It can mean a loss of mar- ket representation and sales, as well as customer frustra- tion. However, we have to balance these factors with the financial performance of each site. In certain markets, a retail operation is not eco- nomically viable."
